Regarding attending A School graduation: We were able to go as we're just 4 hours from GC and it was a wonderful experience. Exactly as others have described it - casual, informal, VERY personal and laid back. The officers were so accommodating in letting us take all the pictures we wanted, recreating the handshakes, etc. You could walk right up and take pictures as they were going across the stage. A drastic difference from PIR where such restrictions existed. That said, I understand graduation from Power School is a MUCH bigger deal in our Sailors' lives and is a much grander ceremony. A School may be around 60 graduating where Power School is ..... 300 or 600? I can't remember! We have chosen b/c of distance and our schedules allowing us to celebrate each of his graduations to be there if possible and I'm so thankful we were able to be. A School was a challenge for our Sailor, I know Power School is a greater challenge, but we wanted to acknowledge the accomplishment. The family side of the room had about as many on it as the graduates so we cheered enthusiastically for all the Sailors. It was an honor to cheer them on as well, knowing that not everyone can make the trip. I know that our son appreciated our coming, but I can see that it might not mean as much to some. Whatever your decision, I know you will be just as thrilled and proud for your Sailor's accomplishment.
Dor - I have been silent on N4M, but have been so burdened for you, your son, and the families who are forever changed. It seems so distant until we hear about it from someone we "know". Prayers for so many.... Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him.(Psalm 62:5) I pray you find rest tonight ....

Anna, no no no ... power school IS grueling, but only in the amount of material thrown at them in the short amount of time. From what my son says (he's now on grad hold, finished power school 10/7), at this point in the program the Navy has already invested in these nukes-to-be, and WANT them to succeed. Instructors make it clear that nukes are "special" and treat them with respect. The attrition rate falls off now; the study habits are established and the work ethic is instilled, so ... don't worry too much. Your sailor will do just fine.

hello all!!

my son is taking his comps for A school on the 17th of this month and graduating on the 20th.  i am praying he does good!!  will you all please pray for his class to do well on their comps.

Our son is nearing the end of A-School (Feb. 17) - says he'd rather us wait to come up for Power school grad, too... I have heard that once Power school starts that it's grueling. I do not get the "old-school" mentality of instructors who spend more time trying to make you miserable, instead of encouraging excellence. Several Navy Moms have warned that it is what to expect. For today's Navy, I think that is sad. We can and should do better. Especially for our Navy sons and daughters who WANT to succeed. OK - off my soap box, for now.

A school for EM (Electricians Mate) is 24 weeks long and Power School is another 24 weeks.  There is a t-track hold in between of a month or more.  after Power School, they are on grad hold until they start prototype which is another 24 week period.   check out the What to Expect upon your Sailors arrive at Goose Creek in discussions above or something like that.

Prototype doesn't really have a ceremony from what I understand -- Power School graduation was very nice - definitely go to that one if possible.

Comment by DramaboysMom on January 9, 2012 at 1:55pm

We did not go to A school graduation, per son's request.  He said the entire "ceremony" was about 10 minutes.   He wanted us at Power School Graduation, and after all he has been through I would agree.  Power School is "the one".  Hope to see some of you on 2/3/12

Dor--I want you to know i'm still praying for you and your son...I just don't really have anything to add to what these wonderful women are already saying...just envision he's fine...I'll keep praying

My son is in class 1209B with a scheduled grad date of 3/16...would he be taking the comps on the 23rd? I forgot to ask him this past weekend if he knew dates for tests, etc.  My understanding is that A-school grad is "just a graduation ceremony" whereas power school is a big deal...is that correct?  I would imagine that prototype probably blows 'em all outta the water (no pun intended) :)

the last few weeks of Power School are full of tests -- finals for the specific classes and then comps -- which covers everything they did during Power School.  lots of studying and stress during those last few weeks.
