Mama C,, I'm with you on the "old enough to drive that far" part ... my son, 19,  is driving from GC with his girlfriend to her family's beach house near Myrtle Beach, just 3 hrs or so, but it's raining buckets up the coast ... I called him to ask when they're leaving and he wanted to know why ... I told him "so I can start the worry clock."

Dor, the empathy here surrounds you.  We so miss our sailors, and any of our children, when the holidays come and they aren't in the bosom of the home (meaning Mom's arms).  Maybe the best thing is to keep busy.  Maybe that means putting out some decorations or doing some shopping, something to keep you moving.  Less time to think.  And you know, those phone calls are better than nothing.  Tell your kids call as often as they can.  These days I talk to one of them daily just to keep my spirits up.  If Skype is possible all the better.  Does the brother have a computer?  I would think you could Skype if he has a webcam.  Hang in there, sister.  I'm Skyping my sailor tonight since I don't think I will get them on Thursday.

Thanks Dor! :)  It's not the inability to do a road trip--love 'em--the financial aspects are a wee bit limiting right now. But, throwing THAT up the Universe too!  I have to have faith that everything will work out...heck, it always does! :)

Jeanne--GREAT pic! Now, if there was a place to plug in my hair dryer I could live in the woods...way better than "civilization". During our "season of storms" here in SE Fla several years ago I found out I could survivie without coffee or a hair dryer but not both simultaneously! :)

Pennie_1152B - I'm so jealous! I so wish I could go to GC to see my son...granted, his PIR was just last Friday and he just arrived at GC late Saturday night, but like so many Moms, I hate the idea of him spending a holiday alone. Tears me up! (I have to stop thinking about it because all I do is cry.) We have promised each other we'll Skype at some point during the day...but it's just not the same. I'm still trying to figure out if I can drive up (9 hours) even if it's just to have dinner. Throwing that one up to the Universe!

I know this growing up will get easier (ME growing up) but right now I'm not particularly fond of it! Time for a cup of coffee and a Tylenol. :)  I hope everyone has a lovely day...those of you travelling, please be safe.

As long as they get it approved they can. For christmas boyfriend is going to Germany with his family to see his step sister and her husband. It got approved. They just have to show them their passport but it has to be in like 45 days ahead of time, the chit i mean. at least thats what he told me on the 45 day thing. he had to get it approved like 2 weeks ago

Well Ladies, this is my first Thanksgiving without my sailor.  This is a rough one for me.  He just graduated A School last week, but couldn't come home - has watch and stuff over the weekend.  Instead, he's travelling today to visit his Army cousin at Ft. Benning for a couple of days.

I'm having a hard time realizing that he's "old enough" to drive however far WITHOUT his Mama!!  I know he'll be in good hands and at least he'll be with some part of our family for Thanksgiving, but this is still tough.  I know there will be other tough days too, but this is my first holiday without him.  I also know most of you have been in my shoes and we all survive, but I didn't expect the emotions that I'm feeling.  TOUGH!!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday - enjoy family and friends.  Our house will be full for a couple of days - wouldn't have it any other way!!  Blessings!

I think they can travel outside the country on leave. I was talking to a retired Sailor who told me Nukes will often go on leave when they have to sign their reenlistment papers so they can fly to certain zones outside the country to sign so that their bonuses are tax free.

Comment by Dodie on November 23, 2011 at 6:58am

Shannon, Sorry, but I don't know is they can travel out of the country while on leave...maybe Mark knows. I know that it can take a while to get a passport. I've read discussions on N4Ms about the need for our sailors to have one should they be at a distant port & need to come home for a family emergency. My son is going to get a passport application from the post office when he comes home for Christmas. There are also places that you can go if you want to get an expedited one, but I'm not sure how that works.

Congrats Martha Lee, I am so glad to hear the great news.  It's refreshing to hear about Nukes that persevere & succeed.

Comment by MN Mom of MM on November 23, 2011 at 1:03am

Yeah Martha Lee...Congrats to your sailor and you.

Happy Thanksgiving to all here.   My favorite memory was not from childhood.  20 years ago...Thanksgiving day we brought our sailor home from the hospital.  What a blessing God gave us.  My due date was Thanksgiving day but he was born 2 days earlier.  This is the 2nd year we will not be with him for T-day or his B-day.  Our (and his) excitment is building for our arrival in GC on 12/1 for the Power School graduation.
