One reason they are on food stamps and WIC is because they CAN.  They do not count their housing allowance or their food allowance as part of their income and because of that it "appears" that they make much less than what they actually do.  I know ... we have a 6 year Navy guy in the family with a wife and little baby and hear most of the ins and outs to the Navy.  They are given $1950 per month in the San Diego area towards housing and if they choose to find a place for $700 a month, they pocket the rest.  So, all in all, it's not really that bad.

RE: Military pay ... there are a LOT of Navy families on food stamps and WIC. Until you've lived on your own for at least a year (no financial help from parents), it's hard to gauge just how much money truly goes "out" every month. Little things, like birthdays or Valentine's Day, can blow the budget. The nukes who share apartments with other sailors are still living in "the bubble" by splitting expenses (internet, rent, cable, food, electric etc) ... it's not the same as being independent. So ... beware of too much enthusiasm about the bonuses, etc. It still doesn't add up to much!. The real payoff might come when/if the nukes finish the program, put in their enlistment time, then head off to the civilian job that pays six figures!!

Get ready.  You will be able to hear my son freak out all the way from South Carolina and clear across the country in the matter of minutes.  I just did his taxes.  We thought he was going to owe thousands because he had the minimum amount taken out.

Well, I sent him a couple messages on Facebook and he should see them soon.

He actually owes $90 on Federal and gets $93 back on state.  He is going to be doing the happy dance for days.

He just told me on Saturday that he has the number $3200 in his head that he will owe.  I told him I was praying it was no more than $1000-$1200.  I cannot believe how lucky he is on this one.  Maybe he will fly home after A school graduation at the beginning of March.

Penny, I can't believe it is already time.  Wow, how was the PIR?  You went, right?

Actually, he probably won't start classes until two weeks from today from what I have heard and seen so far.  My son did that as he got to GC on Wed. and his classes started two Monday's later, and his new roommate got there two weeks ago on this past Saturday and his classes just started today.

Of course we know that is probably not written in stone, but chances are good that he will have a bit of downtime on weekends and in the afternoons/evenings fro the next almost 2 weeks.  I think they get done with their indoc. stuff around 3 or 4 in the afternoon and they are free for the rest of the evening, until classes start and then he'll have mandatory study time every night.

congrats.  I can feel your pride and relief that boot camp is over.

Welcome Penny!! Our son is in class already as he PIR'd on 12 November.

He is an EM.

He and Kelsey got married on 22 December while home on leave. Kelsey is much like Emily (aaron's girl). She is the best and she and Diego are great together. They both just graduated high school last June, so they are both 18 years old. I pray that Korey can find a girl that is as great of a DIL as Kelsey is. We love her as if she were our own daughter and Kacy loves having a "big sister."

Thanks Linda.  Hoping he gets out of Chicago before the blizzard of the decade starts to let loose.

I think A school classes start every Monday (might be every other Monday).  They have orientation classes on the Thursday and Friday before.

Hey everyone, son just had PIR in Great Lakes and supposed to be on his way over there tomorrow as an MM.  Have no idea at this time when the next round of classes start.  Any other new MM moms out there?
