Not da Mama:

Wow, us too, in a round-about way, my son is third generation navy.  I was Navy, my husband was Army, My Father was Army, but my Father-in-law was Navy.

So is this solely for posting on the board, or is there a separate chat function?

I guess I should add that what I'm most proud of is my Son is 3rd generation Navy.  My Father was a survivor on the original USS Yorktown CV5  sunk at the battle of midway.  He was an ABM, I was a BM on a DD tin can in Viet Nam, and now my Son is an MM going back to carriers.  I offer the same advise as I did to parents and loved ones from Boot Camp on through schools.  Patience is a virtue, and no news is good news.  My Son didn't communicate very much at all during A school or Power School. But they need our support more than they acknowledge so text them often, just don't expect an answer every time or often.  Send them Subway and Raising Canes gift cards often.  Bless all of you on this site, even the ones who don't contribute often...like me.  You helped me cope in ways only fellow military parents can imagine.

If they're on a fast attack or SSGN, they would also be able to download content during a port visit, as long as they could find a place with a wireless hotspot - which shouldn't be too hard.

Just something to keep in mind with the Nooks/Kindles. They're really great for underway, and Aaron loves his. Well, his new one. His old one got dropped in the washer while doing laundry on board so his wonderful wife ordered a new one and sent it out for him. ;) But anyways. Point is, while they can connect to the internet to check email and such on the ship/sub computers, it is not possible to update the Nook while underway unless you're simply adding files already downloaded from your computer. Any updating or adding of books Aaron does to his has to wait until they port which on a carrier isn't bad. He loads enough books for about a month and then loads more when they get to port. But on a sub, they'd need to make sure they had an entire underway worth of books loaded. :)

Other than that little glitch, I think they're great sub or surface. :)

NotDaMama,

I'm so happy to read that your son graduated and that you had a wonderful time!  :)

Cara-Yes, our boys must be together. Did you go to PIR? What a snowy mess, lol. My son is MM and also started school this week. Apparently they are renovation so Monday, after school all day and 3 hours of study time, he had to move all of his stuff to another room. He called me late and sounded very tired and agitated. Are you going to A school grad?

Not Da Moma-Thanks for sharing. Every time I read a story, such as yours, I cry. Happy and proud tears of course. And thank you for your service and sacrifice. Wow, you are an amazing family to give so much of your life to our country.

Connie - re:  Kindle/Nook for soon to be on sub son (that is a tongue twister). I was going to get my son one or the other a couple years ago for Christmas and at that time he didn't want one. He was going on his first underway on the sub, so I innocently asked if he had plenty of books - I was informed that he would not be reading - no time as a NUB (non useful body - meaning not qualified to do much of anything - even though they just graduated prototype)  he would have no time to read.  ANY free time was to be for studying.  On a sub they work on 18 hr days - 6 hrs duty, 6 hrs sleep and 6 hrs free.  But.. until he has his dolphins there is NO free time.  My son is now been in 5 years and did get a Nook two  Christmases ago.  He does take it with him now, but still has very limited time.  He is an EM and I don't know if the other rates are the same, but I am surprised of how little time he has for himself.  BTW - just last weekend we actually got to go down in the sub - saw his rack where he will be.  He has 22 in from the top of the mattress to the top of the rack.  He is on the top - no ladder - holds on to a handle/pull on the ceiling with one hand and a steel tubing tray with the other - and swings him self up and scoots sideways into the rack.  Kinda like a monkey - I would never make it.  The person on the bottom bunk actually has to get on their hand and knees and crawl into it.  Gives me so much more appreciation for what they endure.  If if it not too late, send your son a small box with some "thinking of you or encouragement cards to open periodically.  Sorry so long - but you may want to talk to him first before you buy anything.  Maybe some other moms will give you some feedback - but for now I'd wait.

Not Da Mama - what a wonderful time for you and your son!  Thanks for sharing everything - we are heading to Charleston in April (for A school grad) and will definitely take your suggestions on places to visit and things to do.

Thanks 1proudmama and mn linda - I will look on Amazon for my flag!  Maybe I will even have hubby look on Ebay (since he loves searching for things there!)
