Thank you all for your support and feedback.   Hopefully he is given a second chance to be the sailor I know he can be. Please remind those you love of the price they will pay for drinking and driving.  I did not see this coming.  Not for one second did I ever think my son would drink and drive.

I would say there is a chance, that he will 'just' be 'denuked' and go to 'captains mast'.  Captains mast, usually results in reduction in rate, and a fine, but allows a sailor to stay in the service.  I think that what BunkerQB said sums it up in that if he is a good sailor otherwise there is a good chance he will stay in.

Dear Navymombrokenandsad,

Please don't beat yourself up too much. Tough love is always easy on someone's else's child. Besides, how many of us have perfect children? None. At one point or another we have all been in your shoes. Some offenses have more serious consequences than others. I don't know what the current policy is. I would imagine much depends on how he has been doing and conducting himself. I would encourage him to fight to stay in - take whatever punishment that comes along. Maybe get his immediate superiors/instructors to go to bat for him. For what it is worth, my son (who left the Navy last year as an officer on a sub as a Lt) said (when we discussed alchol abuse in the Navy) that if something like this happened to one of his guys and he if felt the individual was otherwise a competent, hardworking guy, he would try to help - take him under his wing, be responsible for him - whatever. Of course, my son has been out almost a year - things change. We will all be pulling for you and your son. I do know we need nukes and the stress on these guys is higher than ever. Perhaps, those in charge will recognize this. Prayers going out.

I also don't know what the Navy would do but wanted to say that God always has a plan, even if we can't see it right now.  My husband got a DUI in June and I thought our lives were over.  He lost a job of 25 years and 2/3 of our income overnight. After 1 night in jail, 28 days in rehab, 3 years of probation and about $12,000, came the silver linings.  He is 8 months sober, found a job he really likes and we did the Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover.  I got my husband back and he is a much happier man now.

I know that really doesn't compare to your son's DUI but I truly think everthing works out the way it's supposed to. My prayers are with your family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Navymom, and your son too. Heartbreaking. God bless you.

My son received a DUI.  He is near the end of school and messed everything up for himself.  I did not raise my son to act in this way.  I am broken.  However this is my son. Does anyone have information on what will happen?  Don’t sugar coat it I need to know.  Please keep judgmental comments to yourself.  I am already doing a great job of beating us both up.

Congrats Emily (and Aaron) that's great news!

Dessert at home - well, I am a Twinkie junkie in mourning (I'm looking at you Hostess).  Dessert out - pretty much anything with lemon or key lime!

Comment by NancyJo (NNPTC) on March 5, 2013 at 9:56am

This is fun. I'm seeing folks I haven't seen for a while!

Desserts. I'm a wierdy b/c I don't really care for ice cream or chocolate cake. At home I love my home-made bread pudding with rum sauce. At a restaurant, I would probably go tiramisu or creme brulee.

My goodness, 2000 members! Navy Moms (and those wonderful men that keep us company here) rock!

Comment by MN Mom of MM on March 5, 2013 at 1:38am

Dor you did start something here with the dessert question.   All these responses are making me think of the rich and gooy cakes, and cherry or pecan pies I have been depriving myself of  as I try to eat healthy.

I too noticed our number climbing.   nearly 2000 members.....I always have sun catchers available for  prizes.
