Just had a fun weekend with my son the ET coming home from Ballston Spa on another  4 day.  He graduates in two months and hopes to be ordered to an attack sub ... in the Pacific.    Has passed his exams so far and is keeping ahead of the curve on qualifications --   the little knucklehead might actually know what he is doing.  Lol.

J's mom, does your son already have a place to live off base?  Roommates?  my son actually found a roommate wanted situation, in a house with 2 civilian roommates, that came fully furnished.  They had a Nuke roommate before him so he felt comfortable with it all.  He did find a couple that sounded good too, one was to room with 2 airforce guys.  He'd just have had to get his bedroom furniture.  But of course none of that works if he's already got a place, and/or roommates lined up.

:) I'm apparently so dang old (51) this "tradition" has developed over the last twenty years or so. I heard of them the first time here on N4M a year or so ago. If they were around in the 80s, few cared.

J's mom, My son was very happy to do the rental furniture. He didn't want to have to deal with any of it when he graduated from proto. All he had to ship was his car & TV & wife's furnishings.

annemarie - I have purchased mine at Northwest Territorial Mint (www.nwtmint.com).  They are good quality and many are engravable.  They also sell plastic cases to store them individually, or racks for display.  There is some tradition within the Navy to trade them on certain occasions.  I believe my son was given one in boot camp.  Mark can probably tell us the real story behind them :)

Son  bought   furniture  at  Furniture  Liquidators on  Rivers.  Got  a   small   kitchen  table,   coffee table,  2  end  tables,  a  futon,  a  lamp,  and  a  bureau with  a  mirror  for  about  $800.  Wish we  had  looked  there  before  trying Walmart  to  furnish the  apartment.  Better  prices,  better  quality  and  they  delivered  the  next  day.

The coins sound nice. This is the first I've heard of them. What are they?
Comment by MN Mom of MM on September 25, 2012 at 10:31pm

NavyMomLG  do you have a recruiter you could ask about the engraving?  I asked the guy here in Mankato what I should put on the coin we gave our sailor after A school grad.

So good to hear from you Dor.  Will be believing with you for the family reunion in December.

Ok, this is really a rookie question, but my son is graduating Prototype on Friday and I am wondering if he is achieving a new title or class or something.  I want to order a coin for him and I'm not sure what to engrave on it with the date.  He got the E4 which must have been after A School, and one with NNPTC Power School for that graduation.  Is there maybe even a name for the location they have been working?  This feels so dumb, but I really don't get any of this information from him and I want it to be a surprise.  Any suggestions are appreciated.
