tkmec5, a good way to ship cookies is in a pringles can. No point in sending goodies in Rubbermaid containers etc. as the sailors have no place to store the stuff, so disposable is the way to go.  Be sure to tape all lids to keep ants from getting in ... when my son was in GC, he said ants got into sealed packages and were even inside unopened PopTart and granola bar boxes (note to the military: ants .. the new secret weapon!!).

Meaning- our trip was in June. We began paperwork in April.

Comment by missa_m on July 13, 2012 at 2:39pm

What William in Nashua said is oh so very true. Sailors must also complete 4 hours of online certification classes that deal with security when abroad (once complete, these certificates are printed out and included in the paperwork). THEN, the waiting starts for the NATO clearance. This was our experience when we applied to go to Italy last month.

Comment by William in Nashua on July 13, 2012 at 1:19pm

Any personal travel plans by our sailors  that involves them leaving the United States has to be approved by the Navy and it takes 2 months for the application.  There is no guarantee that permission will be granted.

I think as William pointed out, the advantage for the Navy is to leave the married men/women in GC for housing purposes.  I don't think there is any consideration given to potential advantages of the sailors themselves ;) My son was happy to go to BS for the change of scenery and a new experience.  He did most of the touristy things in GC, but since moving to BS has now also been to NYC and Boston.  He and his two roomates are hoping to go to Canada on one of their 4 days, do any of you know of any concerns with that?

Comment by GodBlessAmerica on July 13, 2012 at 10:57am

Is there any advantage of taking BS over GC?

Comment by William in Nashua on July 12, 2012 at 10:50pm

cakeseyes my son who is single volunteered for Ballston Spa and got it and so did his friends except one guy who is married who asked to stay in Goose Creek and got his wish. They try to let the married guys stay in Goose Creek where they have base housing. They are all ETs.

My son knew about 10 days after power school graduation and that is only because he went home on leave. I think if you score high in the class you have a higher chance of taking prototype where you want. Grad hold was maybe 7 weeks and no prefill.

Comment by MN Mom of MM on July 12, 2012 at 10:24pm

J's mom, my sailor graduated PS 12/2/11worked at the reactor site for grad hold and he thought for sure he was stuck in GC for prototype.  Late February he told us he was prefill for NY and was to detach and move on April 6,2012.  So he found out about 3 months after graduation.  He is an MM and I know it is different for the ET and EM's

Comment by bobbysproudmom on July 12, 2012 at 10:09pm

Dodie my son graduated Proto in BS this June, He didn't get his orders til about 5 days before.

Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on July 12, 2012 at 7:55pm

Dodie- It just depends on the detailer. We were the last ones to get our orders for his graduating class. All of the subs got their orders first and then the surface MMs and then the surface ETs. The surface EM detailer was apparently very new and had no clue what he was doing because Aaron had to stay in Charleston longer so he could receive his orders.

I know its tough waiting, but it could still be two or more weeks before he gets his. They say they come out about 2 weeks before grad., but I've only met a few people who have gotten them that early. Most are 1 week or less especially recently!
