Not always men in charge...when something happened between my son and another sailor in boot camp it kept escalating until he found himself in front of a woman and that's when it was resolved and in his favor, too!

Wow...Mrs. Andy...that's a weird story.

Connie - probably a live oak.  They get huge and can have branches that touch the ground.  We have several around here. One is the Friendship Oak on the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Campus.  It is over 500 years old.  They are gorgeous majestic trees.

Guilty. Aaron and I generally Skype every night. Some nights our schedules clash and its only for a few minutes if at all, but he has quickly learned how cranky I can be when I don't get to talk to him face to face. Of course, I'll deal with that during deployment just like I did in boot camp, but I don't see the point of going a week without a Skype call if he's just sitting here doing nothing...

If it makes you all feel better, his family and him never Skype. I believe his mom get a few texts here and there... And a phone call when I nag him about getting in touch with his parents.

Michimom ... my son skypes every day ... with his girlfriend. Guess I am chopped liver, haha. But since he's been on t-track, we do hear from him a lot (phone and texts). And today he emailed us the coolest photos, of this enormous gnarly tree in a park outside of Charleston. Apparently it's a landmark, has signs around it, huge branches touch the ground ... does anybody have the history on this tree?

Welcome hapsmolmr! Have you gotten your son's clothes back yet from boot camp ("Kid in a box")? The weeks will fly by and then hopefully you'll get to see him at graduation. So glad you've joined this group ... you'll learn a lot (I do, everyday) and you will be SO happy when your son is in A school at Goose Creek, 'cause you'll be able to talk to him again!

My son just left for boot camp last Wed and is signed up for the Nuke program.  I look forward to learning from all who have been there before.

My son has never shown any interest in skyping so I haven't pushed it.  I am trying to find that fine balance of being a supportive loving mother of a young adult man who is learning to stand on his own.  He and I will talk once or twice a week and text periodically.  He will also do about the same with his older sister, his only sibling.

Before my son went to BC, he wanted to be on a carrier, but then, after talking with various people at BC, he changed his mind to sub.  He did mention that he liked the idea of fewer people and better food.  He never said anything about not shaving--will have to ask him about that.

And Skyping every night?  Well, it's about once a week for us, although we might exchange some texts throughout the week.  I'm enjoying the contact while I can!

Comment by Diana AZ NavyMom on April 10, 2011 at 8:00pm

I know my son has swung between subs and carriers since he started.  It all depends on who he last talked to and what they were on, so I think in the end he will be happy wherever he goes.  I don't think he has really strong feels one way or the other.

Dor, thankfully he had his car delivered on his day off, but he has duty today.  Tomorrow he will probably be driving it all around.  He was even bragging that his gas was less than ours, even though it is all way too high.  Just one more thing to spend his money on.
