Dor - I'm confused because I think our guys started prototype the same time - what class is Jimmy? what plant is he in? - maybe the better question is where is he GC or BS? I know in BS they all got moved back 2 months so Steven wont be done until June 24.
thanks
The whole Nuke pipeline is estimated to take about 2 years.
A school is 3 months for MM's and 6 months for EM's and ET's.
Power School is 6 months for everyone. And so is prototype.
The Navy has a general rule about living outside the barracks is you must be a rank of E5 or be married. If your son is married, then he can live in on base housing or off base from the beginning. However, if he is not, then he must wait until prototype to get an apartment and live on his own.
The Nuke program is tough... extremely tough. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work. I'm going to be honest here: a lot of the sailors aren't happy there. Once they get to Power School, the majority of them are itching to get out of school and get out to the fleet. At this point, they see a lot of their bootcamp shipmates out in the fleet and possibly already on deployment. The Nukes have the longest amount of schooling, not to mention the hardest.
Even though it's not fun, supposedly going Nuke is worth it in the long run. It has a high advancement rate, and the enlistment/reenlistment bonuses are worth it in themselves.
Casey should take this one. :)
Her hubby is far ahead just like your son is, Dor!
And it's a good thing that he's ahead! Means he's working hard and understanding everything! :)
The living arrangements for Power School are basically the same as they are for A school. In A school, they live in a dorm-style room. Two guys per room, two rooms share a bathroom making a "suite." For Power School, they'll sometimes move rooms which may give your sailor a room to himself. He would then share a bathroom with one other guy. However, that doesn't always happen. Aaron still shares a room with anther guy and a bathroom with two other... Not that he really minds though.
For Prototype (after Power School) the Nukes can no longer stay in the dorms/barracks. They are given their amount for BAH in their paycheck, and they are expected to rent an apartment. We, the Nuke girlfriends, really like this aspect because it means the possibility of us living with our sailor without being married. :) Some guys will get together and share an apartment, split the rent, and pocket the remains of their BAH. :)
