Karen, my son knew by about 2 weeks before graduation that he was not grad and go and even knew the day he was leaving for the airport (and even the time!). He left for the airport in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, and his entire division went to th airport at the same time. (For different flights with different flight times, I guess they just take them all together to be efficient.)

I never did hear from him yesterday, so am hoping I will get a call today!

However, as I think someone else noted, when they find out about their flight plans etc can be different for everyone and I've heard about some people where they were told one thing then it changed later. I feel as if we were really lucky to have him for his entire PIR weekend!

Thanks Darla for the info. I love this site, I feel so connected here, I don't know how the moms made it before N4M.

Hello everyone, my sons are in BC. I have some questions, were most of the nukes Grad n go, or did they get liberty? Did they all go on to nuke/A/school together with the other nukes they graduated BC with? How soon did they know their ratings? My sons are both nukes, but don't have ratings yet, is that the norm? They were able to state their preferences.

Karen, I don't want to be a downer here but thought I would just give you a little heads-up. Usually they get their final travel orders the Weds. before PIR. Occasionally things do change so you have to be prepared to be flexible. I sincerely hope that things don't change but I didn't want you to be blindsided.

my son told me in his first letter that he was not Grad N Go - so ask them in your first letters.

only your SR will know for sure if he Grad N Go, but generally the first 2 divisions of a PIR are G&G and typically the 900 division is not G&G.

Regarding names on graduation lists, I just got back from my son's boot camp PIR. It was such an anxiety attack over his PIR list because he had written down the wrong names (which he sent me in his initial letter) and I wrote him, repeatedly, asking him to change the names, and it was only about a week and a half before PIR when he got a chance to change the names on his list. And guess what? At PIR, nobody even asked for our names and checked them against a list!! (The only check was done by asking to see our IDs when we entered the base, but the names weren't checked against any lists, just checked for valid ID.)

I noticed some newbies on the site - Welcome!!! This will be your lifeline for the next 18 or so months. There were a couple questions about food places on base. Just passing along some info I found helpful when my son was there. The Subway gift cards are great b/c it is so close. Sometimes they will eat in the galley, but get a sandwich to have after late night study. There is also a McDonalds on base, but not as close. It is within walking distance, but a little bit of a jaunt. Also, a couple times I ordered a NEX gift card. Here is the site:
mynavyexchange.com. Go to gift cards. For $4.95 extra you can sent a greeting card also. They have lots to choose from - just because, thinking of you, encouragement, military, etc. Most come with the greeting inside, but you can personalize with color, font, etc. Also - go to militarynewcomers.com/NWSCharleston/resources. Go to the Morale, Welfare and recreation area. It tell all that is available on base - the ITT center where discounts can be gotten for lots of area attractions, the Outdoor Adventure Center with a climbing wall. etc. There is also a restaurant - Cap'n Roberts Dive Bar and grill. It is near the Subway, next to the bowling alley. The nukes can to there and play pool. Hope this helps you get acquainted with the area where your nuke will be. Ask away if you have any other questions. We did stay in Foster Creek villas twice and camped at the Short Stay recreation area. Sorry so long, but wanted to let everyone know what all is available and where to look for it.

Dor, A couple of months before Power Sch. grad, our sailor called to get everyone's name and address. Then we all received invitations about 4-6 weeks before grad. When we went to NNPTC on the day of grad, they checked the drivers license of just the driver of the car (my husband) and then we were directed to parking. And that was it, no other screening.
