OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Jen - I agree, your sailor will surprise you. Some things may have changed with the BEQ room assignment shift, but there are generally "veteran" sailors in your son's BEQ or possibly his roommate that will be able to assist them.

If you really want to pay for his cleaning supplies and school supplies, I would check at the NEX at RTC when there for PIR and make sure it works at all of the NEXs. I don't know as I didn't buy one. My son only now has a lot of extra expenses so paying for his own supplies was his first entry into the cost of living on your own.

And the calculator is a specific model. I didn't order it until I knew for sure. They keep them stocked but they also run out quickly and that is usually found at what my son calls the larger NEX which is not fairly close to their BEQ's.

I will bump my A School discussion back to the front, it is a good read through. I shared things from my son's perspective as he went through A school last year. Not so much with Power School - mostly it is just a lot more intensive studying.

The Hammer - WOW - it just seems like yesterday you were sharing on BCMom the flowers you received from your son after he left for BC. Tell him Congratulations!!!

I don’t know if I would worry about the calculator. They are very specific on what they can use - down to the exact model. I think you will be surprised at your sailor’s self- sufficiency. They are more than able to take care of what they need on their own.

And Chipmunk, I do believe you are right about the Walmart

Comment by The Hammer on October 19, 2018 at 5:19am: A school graduation last Friday was great! I really liked that it was smaller as I was able to meet and talk to so many people. As I walked down the aisle, a Mom leaned over and softly asked "Are you The Hammer?", which is proof positive how wonderful this site is!!!

My sailorvhas been home this week and we are going to spend the day together before he heads back in the morning. I'm still coming to grips with the fact that he won't be home until possibly after Christmas.

Where do you buy a NEX gift card? Do I need to buy that during PIR day at the NEX that is on the base? I have a TI scientific calculator that I can bring.

I would recommend you get a NEX gift card if you are wanting something for the supplies. Unless your sailor has someone to take him to Wal-Mart, the only one within walking distance from NNPTC is a neighborhood market, I think - It is too late for me, it might be a full Wal-Mart.

They are going to need a special calculator and I actually ordered on from Amazon and had it mailed to my son, because they tend to run out of those at the larger NEX.

Be sure to also bring his pair of favorite running shoes and possibly plan to ship another, as they do a 5K run each week and also have PT 1 - 2x per week. They may have their own running shoes at NNPTC, much more comfortable than those issued in BC.

- - Enjoyed the pictures everyone -- managed to close on the house on Tues afternoon, but still fairly tired and playing catch up now to finalize travel plans for PS graduation next week. Finally found out move in date for my son's apartment to plan a possible short trip home for him.

FYI - he told me there is a burger bash / picnic for the sailors and their families on Thur starting in the afternoon.

They do comps on Tues and won't find out until muster on Wed if they passed. He did say they get to muster in their civilian clothes, I think.

Also, when they did their PRT, it was to be a black out conditions, so they were allowed to retake if they wanted.

Thank you for the information. I was not sure if they provided pens, pencils, paper or spiral notebooks. I will get him a gift card from Wal-Mart.

I wish I had thought to get a NEX or Walmart gift card for him to buy an iron/ironing board, laundry detergent, toiletries, etc.
