Nursemom- The process for USNA is a little different for sailors versus civilians. Our son was a candidate prior to joining the Navy. USNA has a website that is full of information. I will try to find the link and send it to you. His SLPO will also be a huge asset. Our son was also class leader at the beginning of A school. He said it  required extra study hours and you tutor as needed. He also said the class leader and 2 colleagues (can’t remember their titles) are held to a higher standard. If the class is failing or someone is screwing off it is ultimately the 3 that are held accountable. He enjoyed it but was I think relieved when someone else was given the responsibility (I’m not sure class leader stays the same through all of A school). I hope this helps.

DannysDad - Thanks for the flight information, I will have to keep that in mind for any future travels I might need to do.

Glad to hear from you. Hope things are going well for your sailor!

Thanks, DannysDad - great info!

Nursemom - I saw your question yesterday, but I wasn't able to get online. And I honestly, don't know the answer. Congrats to your son though. Is he looking at the STA-21 program?

You might find this group helpful - http://navyformoms.ning.com/group/sta21ecp

Also, PacNWMom that is on this group, might be able to help you. - Go to the View All under the Nuke Members to the right and click on that. It will give you a search box, put in her name and it should bring up her picture, where you should be able to "friend" her.

Maggi - in addition to NancyJo's great advice, you might find my discussion in BCMom helpful, if you haven't read it already.
What PIR weekend may be like for those flying out of GL

Semper Gumby as B'sNukeMom reminds us.

Well, I am sure my son is busy getting study time in for his two tests this week. Their dental exams have finally been scheduled, during the most inopportune time this week with their school schedule. I trust he was able to get his car sticker taken care of today.

We really enjoyed our visit with him this weekend, even if we did caravan out in two cars and one car back. I am starting to feel like an expert on the southern route from OKC to GC after only two trips to see my sailor. It sure was hard to leave and hard to let him have possession of a vehicle. Some things I have a harder time with as a mom than other things!!

B'sNuke and ProudOfK - glad you had a great visit!!

Maggi when my nuke graduated in May he flew out of O'Hare, but the flight didn't leave until 3-4pm in the afternoon even though they got there around 3am.  If you can, try booking a flight for later in the day on Saturday that way you don't have an extra hotel day to pay for, but you can maximize your time with them even if you have to drive to another airport.  Sometimes late Saturday flights can also be cheaper as most people don't want to travel on a Saturday evening!

Comment by Maggi on August 6, 2018 at 3:44pm

Thanks NancyJo, I'll just have to hope for the best!

Comment by NancyJo (NNPTC) on August 6, 2018 at 3:36pm

Welcome, Maggi! Most do depart from O'Hare simply because it is a bigger airport. Many fly from Midway and it depends on what flights are available. The bottom line for you is that there is no way of knowing. In fact, while the vast majority fly out on Saturday, a few fly on Sunday just because of what's available. My advice is be flexible. If you can stay until Sunday, thus having time on the off change that's when your son will fly, great. No guarantees though, and probably not.

Maybe not real helpful but, as you will learn, all in navy time, needs of the navy prevails.

Comment by Maggi on August 6, 2018 at 3:32pm

Hi, my son is still in boot camp, but then will be on to Nuke school!  I haven't booked my flight for PIR yet, but want to depart from the same airport that he will, if possible.  Do they generally leave from O'Hare?  Is this question ok?  Thanks!

Anyone have a sailor starting ELT on the 13th at BS?

Comment by JayDee659 on August 6, 2018 at 1:02pm

NancyJo, my daughters friends are all Nukes.  Mostly female but some male.  They all seem to get along, birds of a feather, that sort of thing.  Or maybe Mythical Beasts of a feather (or scale).
