Thanks, DesertRose & Jaydee.  My son told me the school will keep the sailors for one month cause they still have to go on duty after graduation. So the month after graduation they may get 1 week off.

Comment by Chipmunk on March 10, 2018 at 8:59pm

DesertRose - I think that is exactly what my son thought as well and why he immediately stepped back into the classroom!!

DOREMI - Liberty after A school seems to depend on the class. My son is only receiving 3 days of liberty after he graduates April 6th, because they had extra time off at Christmas. But another friend whose son is a few weeks behind mine has told his mom he thinks they will have a week of liberty. Mine does have "work hours" after his Friday graduation, so I found out that liberty was Sat, Sun, Mon.

I am finding out it is best to get information straight from your sailor, with anything because we all have different experiences. As bigsky21 mentioned - "usually".

NoahsMom - I feel for you. My son actually left on his scheduled date that remained intact through his DEP year, but an early leave comes as a shock to all. I concur with JayDee659 and bigsky21 - stay flexible, and breath - feel free to ask questions and if you haven't joined BC Moms group, be sure to do that as well.

Chipmunk - we spoke to our sailor last night and he said he turned and went the other direction as soon as he saw them.  He determined only bad things could happen. Lol.

Moonbeam:  my son was in THU (holding at Great Lakes) for close to three weeks waiting on medical clearances.  I planned for him to leave but instead we ended up leaving him there while we went home.

DOREMI, sorry about that!  Yes they do get an opportunity to take leave after A School but I don't think that it's automatically the first week.  My daughter took a week off about 2 weeks after  A School graduation.  I think they rotate them but they can probably put in for their preference.

Hi JayDee.

My son already graduated BC last December.

I'm talking about A school graduation at the NNPTC in Goose Creek, SC.

Comment by JayDee659 on March 10, 2018 at 3:33pm

DOREMI, they do not get leave after boot camp.  They will usually fly out the next morning.  You can meet your sailor at the airport and usually go back through security with them.  Sometimes in the case of a holiday they might get an extra day, but don't plan on it until it happens.  I've seen some moms have all day and into the evening at the airport with their sailor.  Mine happened to fly out at 6:00 am.  You never know.

You and Noahsmom will be well served by joining the Boot Camp moms and then when you get a PIR date, join the group for your PIR.  That will give you the absolute best information on your sailors PIR.

Comment by JayDee659 on March 10, 2018 at 3:28pm

NoahsMom, so your adventure begins.  Welcome aboard, strap in tight, try to relax and chant over and over "Semper Gumby" (always flexible).

My daughter shipped out 4 months early and I had 4 hours notice.  She called me at work to tell me she had to report to the MEPS 2 hours away by 7 pm.  I had walked to lunch and ran the mile back to the office in August heat.  I know how you feel.  It's great that they're getting their career started, but at the same time you want just a little more time, right?

Bigsky is right, barring holidays graduation from boot camp, PIR, is on Fridays.  Within 2 weeks of his arriving at boot camp, you'll get a letter from your son with his PIR date.  That's when you start making your travel arrangements, not before.  That date is set in stone as long as he passes everything.  They usually fly to GC the next morning of afternoon depending on when the Navy can get flights for all the sailors.  My daughters class flew out of Midway, so don't bet on one airport or another.

In the meantime, enjoy your time with your son.  We're here to answer your questions and support you along the way.

Hmm, just a thought, if you don't have a way to carry your cell on you at ALL times, figure it out now.  You never know when you'll get a call from him at BC so be prepared.

Let us know how we can help.  My daughter is now out in the fleet and I've experienced a full realm of Navy-isms and lived to tell.

Do the nuke sailors at the NNPTC in Goose Creek, SC take the weekend off after their first A school graduation?  I want to attend his graduation and spend the weekend with him if he can take the weekend off.

NoahsMom (I have a Noah too!), my son also got called to go several months early....was originally DEP for Feb 2018, but got the opportunity to go last Aug instead and accepted, so we also had about 2 weeks to prepare! You will get a letter after boot camp starts that has anticipated PIR date, but still be flexible because that can change. Grad is usually on Friday and usually they fly out the next day....notice I keep saying “usually” ....the main thing is to stay flexible. A lot of the flights are early, but my son had an evening flight. He still went to the airport in the wee hours of the morning, so I met the bus there and we got to spend all day together at the airport before he flew out to GC. We both had flights out of O’Hare so it worked out great, but they do fly out of Midway sometimes. You probably won’t know his flight details until after PIR. Don’t panic :) any questions you have you will most likely find someone here who can answer :)
