Annemarie - Thanks for the info!  I am looking forward to seeing some of the sights my son has talked about.  He's sent some pictures of houses and churches.  What an awesome piece of history!

Josh'sMom - Why so long to see your son?  Since December?  I must've missed something somewhere.  My son left for BC 3/16 and we saw him at PIR 5/13.  There was a definite difference in his looks and demeanor after BC.  He was always a polite young man and very respectful, but to watch him at PIR addressing friends and officers was amazing!  I'm a bit biased, but he did change alot in so many ways - all for the good.

Haven't seen him since O'Hare airport 5/14.  I'm sure he's changed again since then.  After my trip I'm sure I'll be sharing some of my experiences with all of you.  I can hardly wait to see him!

Mama C: Charleston is an easily walkable city.  You can pick up a walking tour guide booklet at the visitor's center. It's  great way to see all the historic homes, buildings and churches in the city.  There's a flea/farmer's market in Marion Square just across the street from the Francis Marion Hotel.  The Fort Sumter Tour is very interesting as is the Hunley (a Civil War submarine) exhibit. Both are reasonably priced. Have a great time with your sailor!

hey Josh'sMomCindy,

don't believe what you hear...they CAN have their stuff if you meet them at the airport.  don't forget chargers.  It does have to be in an ALL BLACK, no logos, carry on size bag or backpack.  They will already be checking their seabags and garment bags and won't have any "extra room" in those. My son wanted his electric shaver, too.  We met him at about 0230 in the lobby of Midway Airport and his was the first flight out at 0600 to Charleston.  Ask for a gate pass and you'll get to have a little more time with him.  I think all the sailors were at the airport at 0230, even those that didn't have a departure until that afternoon....Best Wishes to you and your sailor.  Congrats!

Josh'sMom - My son is an EM also.  He started A School 6/13.  Good Luck with getting all his stuff to him.  PIR will be an awesome experience!

Binker - I live in northeast Indiana about 25 miles southwest of Ft. Wayne.  Louisville is about 4 hrs. ish away.

Josh'sMom - My son PIR'd from BC 5/13.  He left for GC the next day.  We met him at the airport at 2:45 a.m. ugh - That's when we gave him his laptop, cell phone and IPod.  They can take that with them to GC - no problem.  I also packed a backpack with his new undies (boxer brief whitie tighties) requested, so that he could get rid of the BC skivies.  I packed some snacks too - Zebra Cakes, homemade cookies......  He had no problem getting those through the security check.  They don't even have to take their shoes off because they are "government people".  Also, you can go to the gate with them and wait until they board.

You may want to ask your son at your next phone call if he knows when he is flying out on Saturday.  He may already have his flight info.  That will help you decide if you want to meet him at the airport. We weren't going to miss seeing him - we bit the bullet and met him at that ungodly hour!  It was worth it!

Cindy I have heard of families who bring electronics to the airport and are able to make the handoff, but also some that miss their son or daughter and wind up having to ship the stuff to Goose Creek anyway. Sometimes they fly out at 2 AM and other strange hours. Then you are lugging a laptop around.

I shipped my son's phone to Goose Creek and by the time he arrived the phone was already waiting for him. Besides it takes about a week for them to get settled and get internet set up. Congratulations to your son.

WATTCO...you are not on here often. You must keep us up to date on that wedding.  The thought of your son in uniform walking you down the aisle has me captivated!

Dor - I do remember way back when Jake was getting ready to leave and you telling us about the girlfriend stuff.  I am really sorry that you weren't included in the ceremony.  Hopefully somehow things will go well for everyone and you will all be able to move forward with a good relationship.  I was visualizing that deer in your garden.  Wish I could have been there to help you tame it, haha.  no shooting Bambi for me either.  Your gardens sound wonderful.  I sure wish I could have something good like that.  I do a little in Phoenix, but just cant get any great gardens here.

Mama C--where are you in Indy? While I "summer" in upstate NY, I live and work in Louisville. Heading for Hanover College next week for a week long National Endowment for the Humanities workshop--any of you teachers out there in the area, they have spaces still and there is a 300 stipend. Let me know. I'll send the info.

There is a meet and greet going on with Ohio and KY around Sept 1 in Cinci. I forget who the big wig is who is coming but its another option. Its a breakfast of some sort.

I've been going through the restaurant.com stuff most of the evening!
