Another part of making E5 is the number of openings the navy has ... openings have a name but I don't remember it.  My son said when he took E5 test just "for fun" because even if he passed (he didn't) he wouldn't be promoted.  He took test after being E4 for only 3 months.  More people trying for rank than slots available.

Connie~hoping you get some well deserved sleep, soon!

rylons- Are you saying that he passed the exam but didn't make rank?
In order to get the promotion, the Navy looks at a combination of exam score and evaluations.... There might be something else that I'm missing. Oh! Time in the Navy. My brother passed the E-4 exam 3 times before he made rank because he didn't have the time in. And same for E-5, he had awesome evals (he even got some big award... anyone know what NAM stands for), but just didn't have the time in. I think the time doesn't count for things like the star-reenlistment. :)

Yay! Two more fillies born early this morning. Only one mare to go and foaling season is officially OVER! Then I'll get to see my son!! It's been 6 months and I can't wait to visit him! Actually, what I want more than anything right now is to be able to sleep for at least 6 hours straight ....

On the hotels conversation...back in december we got me a GREAT deal like $55 a night at the raddisson on rivers ave. it was way nicer than i expected for that price. he used this military discount and got something else too. Spring break since it was just 2 nights i stayed at the days inn right off base. it was convient so he could get back quick when he needed to. I honestly felt completely safe whether i was alone or he was there. there was not much to the breakfast but that didnt bother me. i really just needed a cheap place to crash. so it just depends on how much time you plan on spending in your room. i was hardly in the room when i was at the days inn

And if anyone wants to do anything fun and is not worried about cost i suggest taking the dinner cruise. It's a 3 hour tour around the harbor, they take you around fort sumter and under the big bridge a few times and past battery park. definatly got to see a lot. the food was amazing! its about $50 a person and they don't do discounts (i looked all last week when i was trying to book one) and you get to watch the sun set over charleston. definatly a romantic night too. it can either be a fancy evening out with the family or a romantic date with husbands/boyfriends.

Well in BC he was in Div 917, & the girl he sat next to, told her Mom, (she is on this site too), that while he talked about his fiancee all the time, he told Tosha thst he never thought he would miss me as much as he does, that made my day, week, year, and life time. He still say he misses me a lot, so cant complain there. He is a great young man.

You know, my son has been pretty independent too, not wanting to talk all that much on the phone and we've only skyped twice since he got there last Nov.  BUT, when he needs something who is the first person he calls?  Dad?  NOPE.  It's ALWAYS mom.

So I was sitting out at my daughter's lacrosse game several weeks ago and my son calls and says he needs help.  He had taken a friend to buy a car and the friend's car broke down.  They were like 120 miles from base and curfew in 3 hours.  He wanted to know if his USAA insurance would tow his friend's car.  I had to laugh and tell him "well, I don't know.  Why don't you call USAA."

I thought it was hilarious because when the chips are down, he always wants mom to have the answers and help.

I'm really glad in a lot of ways that they are, mostly, becoming so independent.  i don't want to think of them being out there and being so lonely and homesick, yet it would be nice for them to miss us, just a little.  I do feel good that he sends texts to his little sister, out of the blue, just to say hi.  Makes her feel special.  Of course I wish he would do that to me more.

Thanks guys, he is pretty independant too, I just wish I could help some how, being the Mom unit and all of that. He does talk to his fiancee nightly, and one of his best friends on Skype, trying to do that more with him, but also dont want to get him frustrated either that Mom is being to clingy, a hard balance no doubt.

I would find it cool if they got to come home for 4th of July too lol.

Great pic Emily.

Thanks Emily for advice..i need Michael to make the ressies for the Villas for oct!  I'll look at north charleston for hotels for July 4th.

Dan's mom...I was very surprised with the homesickness mine is having...from 6 weeks old he was always on the go....he'd go to gmas for a couple weeks or month at a time, boy scout camp, church camp, you name it he did it and never had a bit of home sickness....I think this has to do with it being "permanent" if you will...he knows he's now 18 and an adult and I think it's hit him. Plus he has his girl now....they engaged and he misses her terribly....a huge downside..I think he would have been better if he hadn't had a GF...now dont get me wrong, I love her!!  but I think she has alot to do with his lonliness right now.

Now, as for the move out of his room...mine never moved after A school..he's in same room now as when he first got there right out of BC...I thought they all moved when they went into power school, but he says he's not moved rooms....
