Chipmunk - I agree. My sailor rented a house with three others. While I did advise him up front to make sure that they discussed what would happen when they graduated... he chose not to take this advise. Subsequently, two of the sailors received their orders and moved out in December. As they did not have an agreement, they simply didn't pay anymore rent. My sailor moved in January but will pay rent with the final sailor in the house until he moves out... as it is the right thing to do.

Thinking about some of the comments made here and ones I have had privately over issues that seem to arise from having to have an apartment during Prototype, I would just recommend you have some open discussions with your sailor about many of these issues. Especially, issues of rooming with others. I had two go off to college and had to deal with roommate issues, but none of them had to deal with sharing expenses and those issues. Another child did though in a different circumstance and like it or not, people are not always trustworthy, and sometimes our kids pay for it through a life experiece. So, it is important to look at the pros and cons of rooming with others, sharing expenses and who is responsible for shutting off utilities - because as has been stated before - not everyone leaves GC immediately after Prototype and move to their duty station. What may look like saving money to have roommates, may not in the long run, depending on how things are handled.

Just some food for thought. Enjoy your weekend!

Mattsmom - Good point. My sailor as well has renter's insurance, even though he is also on a ship.

B'sNukeMom - Thanks!! My sailor is the one that told me about SCRA when I had questions before Prototype about getting an apartment, but I could not remember what it was called.

Somar - Welcome Aboard!! We are glad to have you join us. Feel free to chime in and introduce yourself or ask any questions.

NukemomofC - I hope your sailor is able to take some time this weekend and deal with anything else of his stuff that he needs to. Even with all of the discussion about insurance, that doesn't take care of the hassles and problems that arise from water issues. It is not fun!

NancyJo(CVN70) - so glad your treatments are going well. I hope you continue to feel good.

NukemomofC- big Navy mom hugs! It is so hard when there is added issues/stress in this program.

IslandGirl - hugs to you and your daughter. So glad you will be able to see her soon.

On the subject of renter’s my sailor got his through USAA while he was living in BEQ at Goose Creek and has maintained it since, even when he was living only on the ship without any other physical residence. The renter’s insurance covers his uniforms, electronics, and any other possessions of value on the ship also.

Hi all - Happy Friday.

It's called the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) that allows them to break a lease or numerous other contracts.  Here's the info on it:

JayDee659 - Yes, Liability is why my kids had to have renter's insurance before they could sign a contract on their apartment.

KayCee - I would concur with B'sNukeMom - your son should be able to get a stop payment done through the bank. Also, the apartment complex should be able to give the insurance company the information that the sailors are no longer in residence there and there is no longer a contract for the apartment. Something doesn't sound right. here.

I don't recall what the name of the military clause or provision is, but there is something that my sailor told me about, that allows them to be able to break their rental contracts when they are given orders to move. This should also be the case for the rental insurance.

Maybe WearsLargeHats will chime in. He is good with this kind of stuff.

KayCee - well that is unfortunate!  Seems like there should be some way for him to cancel this.  I would have him contact the bank and put a stop payment on the auto w/d.  I'm pretty sure they can do that for him.  Hopefully when he gets back from his underway he can look into this.
