ShipofDoodles - you can post pictures.  Like you said you can see they post pictures (and often times even names) on official Navy FB pages and groups.  It's just best to get in the habit of practicing OPSEC/PERSEC every chance you get.  On this website we don't post our names and we don't post our sailor's names.  This is a public website and can be seen by anyone so we try to be more careful.  And it's good practice for when they deploy.  Some commands advise their sailors not to post anything and others don't care.  It's always better to be safe then sorry, but you don't have to completely wipe your social media clean! (And just to clear up any confusion my son is out of the Navy now so I post more pictures than I did before.)

Happy Halloween.  Hard to believe but 4 years ago today, we were on our way home from PIR.  Where does the time go?

Thanks to all for the info on pics and security. This has really helped. I was paranoid about even posting a picture of my SR leaving MEPS on FB with no name and no identifying location--and in civilian clothes. He was walking down a sidewalk. Only "Friends" can see my posts, but I deleted it anyway. I am really nervous about FB, but it was how I reconnected with my "sisters" from college for a recent reunion. Now it seems I've opened a can of worms and will probably just stop using it altogether. It is exhausting to follow and can really suck time out of a day.

Again, I reiterate that I hope they are making sure the sailors leaving BC know what the limits are...

JayDee659 - I do feel a little blessed with the Ford news. I will check out the Navy Times, I didn't look yesterday. Thanks!

New Adventures - I realized that no, I don't have any pictures of my son in his NWUs and I don't even think I have seen him in them, except maybe once?? He was usually changed to his civilian clothes before or he was in his dress clothes. For that matter, I have never seen him in his dress blues except for the BC picture that sits on my desk.

Now, there is no reason that when you go visit him, if he is able to change into them in a hotel room or something that you can not take a picture of your son and keep it for yourself.

I don't post many pictures here, but every time I do, I have to reteach myself the proper way to cut the name tag and color it, so it is completely gone, not just "hide" it only to have it appear and disappear on screen.

The BEQs at GC have different designs. My son was in the farthest hall (you can see them on Goggle maps) and his room was 2 adjoining rooms with a bathroom shared by 4 guys. They also had a lounge and finally got the laundry working in his BEQ. And yes, most likely he will have time off this Christmas but will be in Prototype next year. My son had about a week off and with flights and 2 full days in the airport, we opted for him to not come home. He went with his roommates family, I mailed presents and a stocking that I stitched closed and we Skyped!

ShipOfDoodles they are not supposed to be photographed with their names showing.  I know a lot of pictures are out there, but you can't control everyone.  My daughter is not on fb but I wouldn't "tag" her if she was.  Any picture that I post on fb is run by her first and she checks it for name tags, beer bottles, whatever.  Even though she is well over 21 she doesn't want alcohol in the picture (I've done my share of cropping on family pictures due to that one glass of wine).

Chipmunk the Ford has been in the news a lot lately.  It's nice that they finally have their problems worked out.  Navy Times had an article yesterday about the successful sea trials.  Maybe  they can take the Truman's place while they work on their repairs.

ShelleuMarie - the minimum score in most cases is 2.5. A perfect score is 4.0. Hope that helps.

Thank you, Chipmunk. I’ve never been big on tagging and don’t use FB much, but this is helpful to know! I sure hope this is one thing they get through their heads in BC and INDOC!!
Comment by Chipmunk on October 30, 2019 at 10:07pm

ShipOfDoodles - I will defer your question to others who know more, but the tagging of names in pictures is just our preference. My son's pictures are out there, I am sure on my husband's FB account. Let me share that I have a niece whose husband is in a different branch of the military. Because of duty stations, FB is one place she can post pictures for the family, but she never has given her children's names, and pictures with her husband are never tagged.
