KayCee - sooo happy for you!!! Big Hugs, I know that simple text meant everything to you!

Well everyone, I think after wearing the travel agent hat all day yesterday, I have our flights booked, I took the plunge and signed up for a frequent flyer rewards card, as it looks like between my sailor and my eldest daughter who is expecting in Dec. that timewise, I am going to need to do more flying than driving. I hope I got the car rental all taken care of properly and after a midnight EST phone call last night, once my sailor verified the location of his ship, I was assured that the hotel I was looking at booking was the better option than the other one I had in mind, even though it had private beach access to the ocean.  - This is one tired momma today, but looking forward to spending my son's 21st birthday with him!!

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

See the source image

KayCee - amazing how just one simple text can make your day!  Glad he's back ;-D

NonnaB - I like the ida of collecting sand from different vacation spots.  Just make sure you only take a little though.  I remember a story over the summer where a French couple are in trouble (and facing jail time!) for taking something like 80 pounds of sand from an Italian beach lol!  I think you're good with just small amounts ;-D

Nuke Loo's Mom and Deb S. - just remember, you can prepare and prepare and at the end of the day it's the needs of the Navy.  Just remember - semper Gumby (always flexible!).  Keep saying that over and over (and over) and everything will be fine.

Good morning Ladies!  Just a quick message to let you know I'm a happy Mom!  Received a text from my son yesterday saying, "I'm back".  I know that's not much, but he's been silent for two months.  He graduated Prototype at the end of June and then reported to his first duty station at the beginning of August.  He was there just a little over a week and then was flown out to his sub (boat).  I'm so happy to hear from him and will check in again when I hear more!

Have a great day!!

Rose of OH - thanks for sharing your PIR weekend.

I posted and bumped discussions on BCMom group about flying out from GL for all of our up coming PIR graduates.

NonnaB - Your trip sounds wonderful!

Well I am bushed - wearing the hat of travel agent for the family was a long and arduous one for me today. I have only booked flights a couple of times (my husband always did it before) but this was more complicated, and trying to get info from my sailor, etc. But the flight, rental car, and hotel are all booked. Now to see what we are going to manage to visit in VA and I hope that my sailor's leave is approved. Looking forward to celebrating his 21st birthday with him. And he use to say he didn't cost as much money as his sisters, but I think these trips East are starting to add up over the last couple of years!! I would not trade them though!!

@Rose of OH—thanks for sharing your experience after the PIR for the Nukes traveling from RTC to GC. We are prepared for are prepared for all scenarios now!

Comment by Rose of OH on October 1, 2019 at 9:09pm

thesuperm72  My son's PIR was this past Friday, 9-27-19. His flight to SC left at 8 am on Saturday. We had Friday with him after graduation until about 8:15 pm (he had to be back in his ship by 9 pm on Friday). He had to leave boot camp for the airport at 3:30 Saturday morning. Two whole busloads of sailors arrived at O'Hare at about 4:15 a.m.--we got there before they did.

Some of the Nukes from the 9-27-19 PIR left on the same flight as our Nuke, at 8 am. Some left later in the day. It's possible some of them left from Midway, also. At least two Nukes from another DIV that graduated on 9-27-19 were placed in THU (Temporary Holding Unit) and they do not know exactly when they will head to Goose Creek. So, it is positively true that there are a number of different scenarios for your sailor after PIR. All sailors going to SC don't end up on the same flight to SC. They might not all even end up going to SC on graduation weekend. Parents won't normally find out all the final details until they meet up with their sailor after the graduation ceremony. So, the advice you receive about staying flexible is solid advice! It would be wonderful for parents (not to mention our sailors), if we could know the important things ahead of time so we could plan accordingly, but that is not how the Navy works. It makes me admire Navy families even more, knowing how they have to constantly adapt.
