thesuperm72 - My son had a glitch in his orders and so had to get that all taken care of after PIR. So we only had him from about 4:45 Pm - 7:20 PM on Friday. He left on the first bus transport from RTC, so we checked out of our motel room very, very early in the morning and drove to the airport to have the most time with him the entire weekend. He fly out of GL on Sat on a 6:30 AM flight!

Every scenario is different and some have sailors who end up in GL in THU (temporary holding unit) - {they have weekend liberty like those staying in GL} So, you never know. Be as flexible with your travel plans as possible. Know that this may be one of the most tiring, but most happy and joyful weekends you ever have had in your life!!

thesuperm72 - My son had PIR in March 2018. Afterwards, he was able to come home with us (we live in southern Wisconsin) and spend the day but had to be back on base by evening (I want to say 6 or 7pm). He was transported to the airport at 4am and Imet him there at 5am and spent the entire day with him there (thanks USO!) as his flight didn't leave until 6pm. Hope this helps!

For those of you who had recent PIR, how quickly did they fly out to SC for school? Did you have Sat and Sun after grad? Or just liberty after grad and flew out Sat a.m.?Just making our plans for PIR,  and figured this group may have the most relevant experience. Thank you!

Hi all - Happy Monday ~ I'm back and feeling refreshed lol!

All this talk about communication with your Sailor - we were lucky, B called us every Sunday all through A school and Power school. In prototype he tried to call every week but sometimes it didn't happen due to their rotating schedule.  Once he hit the fleet he was good about calling weekly again.  And now he's out and we still get a call weekly.  He's always been one to check in.....sometimes it might just be a short call and sometimes like this weekend it was an hour via facetime.  I know we are very lucky that he does this.

My Nuke (now in the STA-21 program, for those who are unaware), is pretty non-communicative, a trait that seems to be common among nukes. Occasionally, I send him a text asking, "You still alive?" and get a "yep" in response.  That said, once I do get him on the phone I can hardly get a word in edgewise. He's been that way, "quiet until he isn't", his whole life, so I won't blame it on his nuke training.

I actually heard from him the *most* during Prototype. He'd call at least once a week on his way back to his house after "work" (i.e. standing watch or some other task that cannot be interrupted). I miss those days! He's not out in the fleet yet, but when he started going to college we never re-established the habit of the once-a-week call.

Dang, I love and miss that kiddo!!! <3<3<3

Know Weigh - thanks for sharing the No talk rule from the retired Navy perspective. And I do understand their need for down time. That is wonderful that you are only 2 hours from your sailor and he can come home for a home cooked meal and a chance to sleep in his own bed!

Helena2000 - The Beta fish sounds like a wonderful addition to the aquariums!

SuzyPWarrior - I think he just doesn't want to talk about work because when he isn't at work, he simply wants to enjoy his down time and not 'talk shop'. They work long hours. I get it. Also, it was suggested to me by an acquaintance who is retired Navy who had a high security clearance, that sometimes it is easier to say nothing, rather than trying to decide what it is okay to say.

Chimpmunk- My son is stationed in San Diego, which is only about 2 hours from home, so I get to see him often when he isn't underway. In fact, he is home this weekend. Sleeping in at the moment. LOL! Waiting for him to wake up so I can feed him a home cooked breakfast. Anyway, he is on a sub, The Hampton, and has been since early Spring. I don't know how far he has got in getting his qualifications because last time I inquired about the subject, I was informed that he "doesn't want to talk about work". Um.....okay, I guess. I hope, though, he will tell me when he finally gets his Dolphins, because it's kind of a big deal.
