Partnerinwine - Thanks!! My son stayed in his same BEQ room for A school - PS, but I know they were changing some things once he had moved on to Prototype. Thanks for the update.

Rose of OH - If his flag is something that could be laid out as a "blanket", he could maybe drape it over his bunk like a bedspread. ? Just a thought.

Rose of OH- My son just finished A School and is waiting to start Power School. He said they are each allowed one decoration (picture, art etc.) for the wall. They don't have desks but they do have their own dresser. The rooms are small with bunk beds. Once A School is over they move to new barracks which are somewhat larger with two twin beds.

My son did ask for some of his clothes and books. They share a closet, so there is room to store some items. He even brought his paddle board back to GC after his trip home.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Chipmunk!

I wonder if they even have a flat surface to set a framed photo on. I think I remember reading that they don't have a desk, since all studying is done in the classrooms.

Also, his flag isn't what I'd call "small." Probably 3'x5'. But it folds up small enough to tuck into a carry-on bag!

Rose of OH - hopefully someone with sailors at GC currently can reply. My son is probably napping at the moment or I would call him,  but I don't think there is a problem with having at least small flag and an art piece. The concern would be if it can be hung on the wall or not. My son didn't even want many of his books and any extra possible furniture that they squeeze in they have to move from there to an apartment for Prototype and then move out when they go to the fleet. Everything has to be maintained in a neat and orderly manner (even their clothe's hampers, as I recall a comment from my son!) I think it would be mostly if they are allowed to hang anything on their walls.

A question about barracks at Goose Creek:

My son's PIR is Sept. 27. He sent me a reasonable list of a few necessities to bring to the airport when he flies to Goose Creek on Sat. morning. I've seen pictures of those huge, stuffed-to-the-max sea bags they travel with, so I know he can't carry much more than his phone, laptop, running shoes, underwear, and a set of civvies. HOWEVER, he has evidently found boot camp barracks to be so seriously lacking aesthetically that he can't stand the thought of an unadorned living space any longer, and he has asked me if I could bring him a particular small piece of art (a cityscape) and his college flag to decorate his walls in his A-School room. Apparently, he has not been told whether such things are allowed or forbidden, because he asked ME to find out for him! He knows I have very knowledgeable "connections," (in other words, NAVY FOR MOMS)!

So, while I am still more than slightly amused that he is at boot camp pining for interior decor, I would like to find the answer for him! I have browsed through the discussions and various pages on here but haven't run across this topic. I did watch the 12-year old video that shows inside the barracks at GC and noted that the walls were COMPLETELY BARE [though hideous comforters were apparently de rigueur in 2007--ha!])

PS I honestly believe the real issue here is that boot camp had nothing at all to remind him of home, so once he's out of there he craves a small touch to make his surroundings more comforting and not so stark. Totally understand that!

Thoughts for all of our members in FL and on the East Coast.

For those with new sailors at GC, they will take care of them during the storms. My son went through two different hurricane evacuations.  If your sailors have their vehicles there, this is a good weekend to remind them to make sure their car is in top running shape. Gasoline filled, battery new and charged - don't leave lights on by accident.

Veteran members - please share any experiences your sailors have had. Here is one of mine.

Regarding getting harder - I think in Prototype they are trying to help the sailors get past a "school time" mentality and move into a "fleet - on duty" mentality. What that means will vary from ship to ship. I will just say, sometimes the NUKES alone are the ones going on some very long training days. They have to stay flexible and be ready to do whatever it takes to have the ship ready for operation.

And the training for me - is learning how I share what I know, but without going against OPSEC/PERSEC and that is hard!

Super excited to say I’m in GC visiting our sailor ❤️ It’s only the third time we’ve seen him in the past two years! He looks good, healthy, strong and motivated....thanks again for all the advice and experiences everyone gives, it has certainly helped me. I don’t comment much, but I do read the comments regularly. Sending love to all my sea sisters!
