Good Morning Everyone - Remember Your Red!

Comment by Mshelle on August 29, 2019 at 1:43am

ShellyMarie, The BEQs are very space limited.   My daughter too likes to cook and can't wait until she can get her own place once in prototype.  But, they do have a  microwave and refrigerator.   They were there.

I also was in Charleston the first weekend after arrival from BC.  while at Target, a few other groups of sailors where there loading up on supplies,  like toilet paper,  hygiene necessities,  etc.  You can tell all those in phase 1 or INDOC as they are in uniform. I also seen a couple TVs purchased at the NEX.

I know there is one married sailor in her class and he has an apartment on base that has a kitchen.  That may be an option.   I am sure his classmates would be glad to do some taste testing...lol.

SubmomIII and Bern - May you have safe travels and get lots of hugs!

WearsLargeHats - thanks for the Aeropress suggestion!

ShellyMarie - My son wanted to make sure I was leaving a space at home for all of his books! Your son may want a few of those board games.

Comment by ShellyMarie on August 28, 2019 at 11:09pm

He has a nice pair of running shoes, he only had about 3 weeks to wear them before he left.  I will be sending them along with a few books I know he will want.  I have to constantly remind myself that I can't send all his favorite things, he won't have a place for them...  Otherwise I'd pack up almost his whole room, and shelves full of board games!

Bern I can't get my head or my heart around what you must be feeling. Enjoy every moment you have with him. (Btw we have an almost 27 year old special needs daughter - I know your hands are full)

My boy is home for possibly the last time for the next 4 years. We live on Cape cod and the Navy is flying him out of Chicago to go to Guam. I thought being a young single mom in NYC was hard but nothing can compare with letting him go. I'm lucky that he's such a great smart person that usually makes the right decision and I don't regret supporting his decision to not go to Harvard or MIT for the Navy but this is harder than I thought it would be. I also have a 6yr old with autism so my days are busy and full but a piece of my mind and half my heart is with him. To maximize the time we have we're driving to Chicago to see him off. I'm so proud.

Getting on a plane tomorrow to go see our Nuke!!!  The only sort of drawback - we are going to Florida.......where it appears Hurricane Dorian may be headed.  We leave there early Monday morning, so we'll see what happens.  Definitely packing rain jackets though!!!  Can't wait to get one of his signature bear hugs!!

ALSO - we'll be in Vegas October 21 - 25.  Anybody else?!

Comment by WearsLargeHats on August 28, 2019 at 8:15pm

I second Chipmunk's advice to wait.

My coffee-snob tip for someone who only can have a small microwave would be to get an Aeropress. Simple, easy to clean, and makes great espresso or Americano with any decent coffee. Even inexpensive Café Bustelo. Also great for camping.

Comment by Chipmunk on August 28, 2019 at 7:23pm

He might end up making friends with one of the married couples and they invite him over where he could do some baking at their place.

I waited to send anything to my son until he let me know what he wanted for his BEQ. I kept trying to make sure he had enough blankets, etc, and he kept telling me he was good! What I did not buy enough of though were his favorite tennis shoes that I bought from Payless before they went out of business! Your son will want his favorite running shoes for PT. The ones they are issued at BC were not comfortable for my son and I have heard that from others as well.

I knew he wouldn't be able to cook when he's on a ship, but I was hoping he would before then.  I know he'll adapt and be okay.  :)
