Along for ride: submarines are assigned to a squadron, which consists of several similar subs and is commanded by Rear Admiral (usually). A new arrival from the training pipeline reports to the Squadron headquarters first, just as Tom said. The off crew for SSGNs spends most of their off crew time in the home port (Kings Bay on east coast, Bangor WA on the west) and flies to the boat at the appropriate time to be ready for crew turnover.

Sorry, what does "go to squadron" mean?

Thank you, that's helpful.

She's trying to figure out if/when it makes any sense for her to relocate to Georgia.

Tom comes through again! It used to be that "he/she" was't necessary when talking about subs. Anyone hear how having women on board subs is working? I haven't heard a peep.

B'sNuke you are becoming a regular lady of leisure. 4 day weeks sound really good to me. Our school year is getting ready to start. New teachers started last TH, veterans return tomorrow, and kiddos start 8/10. I'm going to SD to visit my sailor  later this month...can't wait!!

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!  I'm taking Friday off again so another short week for me - woohoo!

Along for the Ride - I don't know how the whole sub thing works.  My son was on a carrier....hopefully someone here will chime in with info.  There's also a fairly active sub group on here that might be able to help.  Here's the link:

I have some questions about the life of a submariner. My daughter's sailor is set to finish prototype at the end of the month and then is assigned to an SSGN home ported in King's Bay but forward deployed to Diego Garcia. I understand this class of sub operates with two crews, one of which is on the sub and one of which is not.  So, when he reports to his sub, is it possible he could go directly to the sub and possible that he would be doing something in port? Would be be in Georgia or in Diego Garcia if he is on the off-crew?

My daughter is set to finish her degree program this fall, and would be considering moving to King's Bay--but not if her sailor is going to be on the sub for six months or in Diego Garcia. There's really no way to know this or plan, I know, but what is typical?

CoTwin - fingers crossed on the job.  They'd be lucky to have you ;-)

Our humidity is finally dropping a bit so it's starting to feel better thank goodness!  Also, we had some weird dust storm on Saturday that came up from AZ - it was really yucky out.  Couldn't even hardly see the hills but now today it's finally looking to be back to normal....and we were getting some strange, funky smell blowing up from the Salton Sea - ugh.

I would not kid you ladies about Christmas.  My mom asked me the other day for Christmas ideas and I 'bout fell over.  It will be here before you know it!

COTwin, that is awesome! Fingers crossed and prayers winging upward!

Mindya so glad you could join us. It's been 6 yrs for me and I sill don't know what I would do without all these grand ladies. Good luck with travel plans. Always a little shaky on dates so be flexible and get travel insurance.

Hey, Interview went well yesterday. The head of the whole program liked me. The Executive Chef texted me that about 5 min. after I had gone. Looks good.

This is a Meals on Wheels that gets donated food from a local (4blocks away) organic farm, They pay $250 a year for food share program and get all they want for the year!! and they get Grass fed, organic meat donated from the local 4H. I love that they make healthy food for those in need.
