Like the dress rehearsal and the real thing show.
Underway short a few days to a few weeks. Deployment for months. Mine just finished a six Monther.

Lilo, see the "Almost Made It" discussion above. Yes, they do have to move out, at least at GC. I don't think BS has a DTP facility, they might get sent to Groton. DTP is comparatively restrictive, but nothing to worry about.

Thanks everyone for the great clarifying answers and laughs as well !!  Appreciate the shared knowledge and black humor.  Being a nuke parent is kinda like caring for an aging parent with dementia!  You just gotta stay fluid.

I'm so thankful for this group!  My sailor's been in over 2 years and next fall his twin is joining the Coast Guard.  Everyone says how relaxed I seem about that in comparison!  I guess I've now learned that the only way to manage is to just take it an hour at a time and not to stress.  For the new parents on-line, it honestly does get more manageable!

Hope everyone is staying cool in these heatwaves.  Best to all.

Thanks for the info Tom and thanks for the support NancyJo.  You all are so supportive and informative.  This program is really stressful.  At one point, when my sailor was in Power School, when we visited, his words were "the torpedo room is looking very good these days and I have my crows!!".  I took that to mean he didn't think he would pass.  But, he did by the "seat of his pants" as the saying goes.  It didn't help that his PS was only 5 months instead of 6 so that has to have an effect.  He also said that he learns differently and I guess getting the quals done is challenging.  So, we will sit and wait.  I sent him a funny card and an encouraging letter like I have done since boot camp.  But, no matter what, I'm sure he has a career in the Navy.  He is an MM right now but I'm sure that will change and hopefully he will subs like he had wanted if he leaves the program early.  We told him we are proud of him because we know he has been really putting in an effort to complete this part.  But, its unconditional so whether is is nuke or reg Navy, he's the best!

I just know I dread when my son is deployed.  It is right up there with a trip to the dentist (every day for 5 months), or if you were a dog, having to get fixed at the vet.  I know it is a part of my son's job in the Navy and I support him.  But I miss him terribly.

I'm cracking up at this too!

Hope everyone is having a great Monday!  We're having a HEAT WAVE here and it's a doozy!

I hope all the dad's out there had a wonderful Father's Day;-)

Hi everyone.  Where is BS?  Thank you

OMG I'm am dying at the comparisons. bwaahaahaa

OK, I'm better now. Tom, as always, you say just the right thing. Lilo, you just never know. Sit tight and see what happens with your sailor. I think you've been around long enough to know that leaving nuke, if that happens, is not the end of the world.  It's all about finding the right thing for your sailor. Best of luck to him and keep us posted.

WearLargeHats - thanks for the answer.  I understand that DTP is for transitioning personnel.  My son knew several sailors that were sent to DTP when they did not pass power school.  My son is in an apartment right now with two other sailors.  How does that work.  Does he stay in his apartment and work until transitioned or does he have to move back to base until he is re-sassigned?  Is DTP restrictive?  We still don't know if this is going to happen but he said he is suppose to talk to someone this week about his options.
