Good Morning all - Happy Thursday!

Maria - you can pretty much plan on almost 2 years in school from start to finish.  Most delays will hit once they get to prototype (the final school).  My son's graduation was changed I think 4 times.  Originally it was to be in October '14 but finally ended up in January '15.  He spent just over a year in NY.....

britefuture - I'm sure glad you have the energy to do this lol!  I don't know if I could....

Welcome tara505!  Definitely read up on the info to the right under the member profiles.  You'll find answers to many of your questions there.

Welcome, tara505! So glad you joined us! And of course the wealth of knowledge that these moms hold has already answered your question about privileges. Good advice to read the discussions to the right on this page. So much info there! Good luck to you and your sailor as you start this crazy nuke rollercoaster. Don't be afraid to ask anything...no question is stupid if you need an answer.

Hi tara505.

My son PIR'd on Jan. 29th and then to Goosecreek on the 30th.

His classes did not start until 2-22, which was one week longer of indoc than originally thought.  They have to wait for a class to fill up before they start.  The clock for "phasing up" does not begin until classes start.  They just phased up to Phase 2 last Friday (March 4th) so now he can wear civvies off base and they have to be back by 12:15 am.  If they want to stay over night off base, my son believes they need a chit for that.    Hope this helps!

Good morning Tara, and welcome.  I haven't had the opportunity to answer in a while so I'll try to help on this one.  Congats. and Bravo Zulu to your son on his graduation.  I hope you were able to attend the PIR ceremony.  It's quite the spectacle.  From what I remember,  the "newbies", at GC have to earn privileges (ie. wearing civilian clothes, having a car etc) and that takes time. I'm almost positive he wont have a weekend for a while.  Someone will elaborate or correct me if I'm wrong.  Have you looked at the discussions above?  There are many informative articles up there. If you click view all, you may find more specifics about your questions.  Good luck and welcome again.

B'sNuk- I'm sure your PS will be fine.  I actually used what my Sailor told me during power school.  He would say, "once I found my rhythm and stopped stressing about my grades, and stuff outside of the Navy, things started clicking".  And that's what I did.  A perfect example would be that I've been up since 4 a.m. working on an essay that isn't due until next week, lol. As a mom of an energetic young boy, I stopped stressing about when I would have time to get my work done.  I get it done when time allows me.  Usually that's early in the morning or after my son goes to bed, or when I'm in my quilting room and doing laundry.  No one bothers me then. You'd think there was kryptonite in there, lol. I just don't stress about it and has made a world of difference.

Enough of my rant.  One more day till Friday. Yay!

Hi everyone. New Nuke mom here. I have a quick question that someone may be able to help me with. My son had PIR on Feb 26 then arrived at Goose Creek on the 27th. His school doesn't start for a couple of weeks. My question is will the phasing stay on schedule so he can have an overnight weekend or does he have to wait until school starts before he advances? Thanks

B's Nuke Mom, sounds like he is on a good path! Thank you for the explanation, being new I got a little confused earlier on your timelines.  I pray that everything goes well for him with his future endeavors.  I believe everything happens for a reason.

B'sNuke, I'm confident your PS will be just fine. The navy drums that positive behavior into them. Also, with the support he has from his family and the people in VA that he has grown close to, he will only be that much stronger. It's all good!

Comment by B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet) on March 9, 2016 at 12:28pm

britefuture - glad to hear school is going well!  That's the thing I'm concerned about for my PS (using your term of past sailor!) - being able to stay focused in college. It's not like nuke school where someone is constantly "riding" them and mandatory study hours (in his case). I reminded him that he can't procrastinate - hopefully his Navy training and the study habits from nuke school will kick in and he'll be able to apply all he has learned.  That and he's older now and he wants to get this done!

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

Maria - yes my son finished school and then was in VA on the Truman for his sea duty.  They went on many underways during the year he was there and he deployed with them but was only on the ship for a month when he was sent back to VA & separated.  He's not the best example of how things should work! (he made a poor choice outside of the Navy)....Fortunately he got an Honorable Discharge and will now be going back to college to get his degree.  It's not how he planned it but it's working out. He really enjoyed the Navy life but it wasn't meant to be....and it wasn't the end of the world!  He's been told (and from the research we've done) that some of his nuke schooling might earn him some credits but he doesn't know for sure yet.  I know if you study "nuclear engineering" that for sure some of them will transfer over, but he's doing mechanical engineering so it's still up in the air.  He's also waiting for his Navy transcripts to be sent to the school.  Either way he's a pretty positive guy and he's making the best of it.  That's all I can ask right now ;-)

britefuture, I love your upbeat, cheery note. What a great way to start my day! Back to school as an adult is a huge challenge but so rewarding! I'm proud of you.

CoTwin, you are right. Our kids get so grown up. My son bought a new car and licensed it, and bought his own plane tickets. He manages his whole life without needing mom to do anything. Of course, now he's got a wife who does quite a bit of it, but nevertheless, the navy made a man of him. PS love your FB posts for your bakery. Saw the sweet little girl eating biscotti. Love that!
