So how does nuke security clearance work? My son had some kind of clearance verified before he was able to go to RTC. What else do they do for clearance for nukes?

I am not sure on security clearance for my nuke. Seems he wasn't even sure. His twins was very much more involved. Has a guy in a dark suit show up at out house the day after PIR. Interviewed lots of people some at our house while I had to wait outside in the snow! His boss they went to Oaklahoma to interview. Our pastor etc....

J's/S's, Bravo Zulu!! Good for him and good for you too. What a wonderful achievement.

Good advice regarding the various graduations. It's all very individual.

Thanks B'sNukeMom!  It turns out that she has plans to go to a Christian concert with some classmates that evening and she was afraid her dad and I would be bored.  Bored in Charleston?  Now that she's figured out that we can entertain ourselves she's very happy that we're attending.  So we're off to Charleston next week.  We ran into our daughters recruiter at dinner last night and he told me that another young man from here is graduating power school the same day.  Such a small world.  That makes 3 people from home that are there with my daughter.

Hi all - Happy Hump Day!

My son also spent 9 months in DEP.  Gave him time to get everything done that he wanted.  Towards the end the time flew by!

JayDee - we went to A school grad and had a great time.  It was in April (2013) & held indoors.  Since we were coming from CA we made a little vacation of it.  Did all sorts of fun things - if you can go I would recommend it!  We did PIR, A school & Proto (NY). (Everyone says that Power School is probably the biggest as far as ceremony though.)  And if you can't make one hopefully you can find another mom to take pictures for you!

Hi NancyJo,

We have been here in the States for nearly 8 years now- so my daughter was not quite 11 when we moved here. Since she's been here nearly half of her life and her life is here, she says it wasn't a big deal to renounce Canadian citizenship. I think it was mostly annoying and stressful to her, having to wait for it to go through while worrying that her ship date might be pushed ;) She's very committed to her service and we are so proud of her!

About information- you are so right. I'm hoping that DD will be good about sharing info, but it seems she doesn't always know what's going on either. lol I guess I will follow her lead regarding graduations and such. If she wants us there and we can make it happen, yay! If she doesn't think something is a big deal, I guess we just go with that...

It's weird, isn't it? Being in charge of all of the information for 18+ years, then all of a sudden we know very little and have no say at all. Pretty big adjustment!

My sailor is not a big "sharer" and nothing is ever a big deal. If it wouldn't be for N4Ms, I wouldn't know anything.

I didn't go to A or proto grads due to finances so picked the big ones, PIR and PowerSchool. But Buzzbeck has it right...flexibility is key through this whole process. I can't say it enough: Needs of the navy trumps everything.

My son was in DEP for about 9 months. They did come to him to say he could go early but he said no. He had a whole itinerary of good-bye parties and arrangements to make and once his plans were in place, he didn't want them disrupted. I think how different his life would be b/c it was during DEP that he met and started dating his wife.

laughingchipmunk, was it hard for your daughter to renounce her Canadian citizenship? What a big step. But on behalf of the USA, I'm glad she's ours!

Good morning all!

Iaughingchipmunk, I think it's hard to say how long your son's security clearance will take. From what I've experienced so far, there are few hard and fast rules on timing. My daughter enlisted in July and was given her early December ship date. She didn't turn 18 until early September, and had to renounce her Canadian citizenship (she was a dual citizen at the time) before they could start her security clearance. Once that official certificate came in, probably early October, they got to work and everything was set in time for her original ship date. So it seems they did hers in less than 2 months- but maybe they had pretty much everything done and just needed her renouncement cert. to finish? I think the waiting is hard- on them and on us! DD got to Goose Creek Feb. 6, but isn't scheduled to start classes till the week after next, I think. Good thing we all have each other!

It took about 6 or 7 months for my son's security clearance.
