Well put J's/S mom.

My observation about racial bias is it also runs both ways. I see Both Latino and blacks stick to their own and are every bit as bigoted against Whites.

But I now live and work where there are many many latino's and I can say that most are super nice.  I am learning some valuable lessons.

Most gun owners that I know have absolutely no issue with some additional regulation.  And we know a lot...we spend a lot of time at the range.  Want to do a more comprehensive background check?  Sure.  Make sure I don't have any mental health issues?  Sure.  I will pass.  I will be fine.  BUT...the problem is that people think this is the FIX to the problem, and it simply isn't.  Many times these shooters haven't even obtained their weapons legally, which means no amount of regulation would have prevented it.  It is like saying if we legalize drugs, then there won't be anymore drug problems.  Not true at all.  This a multi-faceted problem, and must be fixed accordingly.  Fixing the mental health problem in this country is one of the most important steps.  It is very, very difficult for people to seek help in many situations.  It needs to be easy, and there needs to be no stigma attached. That being said, I have a concealed carry permit, and I carry most of the time, and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot someone who came in somewhere that I was and began shooting.

Buzzbeck, there was at least one other person with a gun on that campus.  He didn't draw his weapon because he was afraid the police would confuse him with the active shooter and shoot him. http://www.rawstory.com/2015/10/armed-vet-destroys-gun-nuts-argumen...

J's/Ssmom and JustaMom: This is a complex topic, I agree with you both. Here in Oregon the Umpqua CC shooter was the only one on campus with a gun. If only one other person had had a gun, he could have been stopped. If the shooter had not had an automatic weapon, he could have been stopped. He was mentally ill, if he had been institutionalized, he could have been stopped.

This might not be the correct forum for this discussion but since it was brought up...  I would really like to understand why some people want to put more guns in the hands of the public to protect us from mass shooters.  Where do you think a mass shooter comes from?  Do you think a mass shooter is someone not part of the general public?  The people who conduct these mass murders are part of the public. The next one could be your coworker, your neighbor, your little league coach, someone you know in some way.  It is way too easy for people to get guns.  The more guns we have in the public the more mass shootings we are going to have. It isn't progressive agenda causing this; its people who really believe the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.  How do we recognize the good guys from the bad guys?  How do we know when a 'good guy' has his/her life turned upside and becomes a 'bad guy'? We don't need semi-automatic assault weapons in the hands of the public.  We don't need guns with clips that can hold 30+ rounds of ammo. We need help for those with mental issues.  We need to close the loop holes in the gun permit laws.  Cars are more regulated than guns and guns kill more people.

J's/S's, just to set the record straight about your last sentence; that progressives disarmed our military bases. Most people (wrongly) assume that Clinton mandated this. The fact is that George H W Bush issued a directive making military bases gun-free zones, that directive became a regulation under Clinton.
(just stating facts - remaining apolitical in this discussion.)

Yep, I agree J's/S'smom....there's just no reasoning with people like that.....EVIL through & through...

Racism and religious bigotry blind more than they inform. I could also argue that certain conservative policies and ideals contribute greatly to the problem. But, I don't think that I can persuade you, and this is the wrong forum for such discussions. We come to N4M to share our common experience of having loved ones in the Navy. Please remember that we do not all share the same political and religious viewpoints, nor do our sailors. Yes, there are liberals and progressives in the military!
