B'sNuke, that's a great article! Sounds like your sailor has landed himself a great command. How exciting! Good luck to him and the rest of the crew. And good luck to you! Deployment is a whole other animal.

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

Same thing happened to me Co-Twin - just took me to FB page but nothing there....

Saw this in the Navy Times yesterday - good article about the USS Truman (my son's ship) & how they are getting ready for deployment (and yes, I can attest for how busy they have been!):

Cerise, there are definite differences between fast attacks and boomers in that regard.  There is a process established for notifications to some, but the sailor has to submit the [very short] list of who would be in the notification "tree" that is normally activated a few days before a return from a deployment.  It is normally for a spouse or girlfriend; I can't say whether parent will be considered a close enough relationship (sorry, just don't know).  Unfortunately, that list is normally final when the boat leaves for the deployment, and it does have to be done by the sailor - so you may be in the dark beyond what you already know until the boat is back in Groton.  Sounds like he is getting a great experience seeing some European ports.  At this point the boat's ombudsman is your best source for info.  I know the 'Sub Moms' group has a number of ladies who can assist you in getting the ombudsman's contact info.  BTW - the ombudsman is usually the spouse of someone senior (could be officer or enlisted) on the boat who volunteers to be a point of contact for dependents of the boat's crewmembers.

Follow-up on my own post.  I've read some posts about how far in advance we'll get notice of the subs getting back to their home ports, but it seems to vary so much.  My sailor is on a fast attack subs, does anybody know how much notice we'll get for a fast attack sub?

Re passports.  My son who graduated Prototype April 10 and reported to his new base (Groton) in end of April, called me the day after reporting in to have me check the expiration date on his passport.  He reported it to his senior chief, who gave him his own  home address and asked him to have us ship it there immediately.  He called me Thursday, got the passport Monday and shipped out Wednesday!!!   He flew commercially to meet his sub in Bergen  ( http://www.aco.nato.int/nato-antisubmarine-warfare-exercise-begins-... ).  He definitely needed his passport immediately.  I was surprised because I thought he would be in Groton for a while, nope.  After Norway, they moved to another country, where he also called us from.  Last time we talked to him, he said they were preparing to leave.  He knew where they were going but wasn't allowed to tell.  All we know is what he told us, that he came on the sub after it had been out for 2 months and it would be out 6 months all together.  So we have an approximate date, well, month really when they'll get back.

Hi all - Happy Tuesday! (Too soon?!)

I added a discussion above about Prototype coins for Ballston Spa.  Let me know if anyone is interested & maybe we can figure out how to get them ordered.  Minimum order would be 25 coins.  I've sent Craig a few messages and haven't got any response regarding our coin he was going to make us....anyone else heard anything?
