Good morning!
My son got the weekend off so we are driving to Washington. Visit some family and finally going home on Monday.
Cristy I think those are the barracks my son put a request for. Hope he gets it sometime.
He's very animated now, the commander told them to look into taking some college credits. I'm happy he's happy and looking forward to that. It's a long time until the ship is ready so he might as well use it to further his education.
B'sNuke is your son's ship in the Norfolk piers or Portsmouth?
CB'smom hope we don't get into bad traffic on 95! This is not the best weekend but we have family waiting.

Sad indeed. Thanks for updating us. Prayers for the families.

Yea, Brightfuture... My non-nuke sailor told me of a weird circumstance when out to sea some times where the water is totally calm and the sky is the same shade of blue, you can not tell where is water and where is sky like you are floating in a sphere. it is a weird feeling. I can almost picture how that is, I would think that it is disorientating.

Lots of activity here lately. That's always good to see.

Got a short message from my son. Said it's just like being back in Proto all over again, with having to get check outs again. And it's sometimes just as difficult to get them. But said they don't get on them as much so long as they're studying and making an honest effort. He got to go up on deck for the first time and said, "yup, water to the left, water to the right, front and back". Lol

Before he left, I had pictures done of my son in his whites and blues. Well, he insisted that every picture was taken from his left. So that his patches and such showed up. Well, they show up great! The problem is, silly boy ironed his whites inside out so the crease is wrong. And it's REALLY noticeable. And I think that I already explained that he forgot his pants for his blues. Lol These kids!

Prayers for the missing Marines. How awful! Such a tragic story  about the Amtrak. What was the conductor thinking?

Hugs to all.

Good morning everyone!
B'sNuke we tried for the base tour yesterday but those were suspended because of higher alert. So we toured the base ourselfs. Got to see every ship but the 75, we didn't get to that pier. We saw the USS Leyte Gulf the last cruiser my husband was onboard. There's sailors everywhere, it's a very busy place.
Hope you get to take the tour when you come, they even take you to the airfield.
Im happy for your son that he gets to live off base its crazy in there. I can see why your son doesn't like it in Norfolk CO-Twin. That said Norfolk is 100% better than the Newport News Shipyard. And yes 1proudmama, that's the word for Newport News! Dump it is.
Is your son an E5? If he is, he's lucky, if not he will be living at the sailors barracks at Huntington. There's living quarters in Portsmouth which is much better but it's all full right now. My son got on the list to move out. Your son will be in indoctrination for three weeks. 7 to 4 but mostly get out at 3pm. There's a small fridge and microwave in the rooms which are occupied by 3 sailors. They share a bathroom. The TV is the old type, the wifi isn't strong, at least in my son's room there's no signal. It's very depressing for a sailor to be stuck there. Takes about 20 minutes to get to Norfolk without traffic. My son likes the Newport News Park, there's camping and trails, very beautiful about 20 minutes on I64. The Peninsula Mall in Hampton is very nice. Virginia Beach is nice but he says that it lacks the appeal of his FL beaches. Everything looks pale for him right now but it is what it is and that's life! He will have to make the best of it. At least the don't have a curfew.
His uncle actually lives in Doswell. He's a former marine colonel retired a few months ago. Much of the time he's not here he's a pilot. Hope the transition for your son goes easy. We are in Norfolk on DOD lodging to be closer to Newport News. Will take the trip to Washington on Saturday. Will send you a pm with my sons info, surely hope the meet sometime.

Hi all - Happy Friday Eve!

bclmomct - can't wait until you visit SoCal - we'll have to meet up!  Congrats to your son on his orders ;-)

I think the reason my son is ok with VA is because he has his own apartment.  He can at least get away from the ship sometimes.....So far he hasn't really complained too much about the area though....(He lives in VA Beach).

CoTwin - nice that the airlines bumped him to 1st class!

We are waiting for rain again - supposed to be some today and into tomorrow.  Won't get us out of our severe drought but hopefully it will help a little.  My godson lives in Texas - League City and they got something like 9.5" in an hour he said.  Flooded some areas ~ yikes.

I haven't heard any updates on the Marine helicopter crash in Nepal - sure hope they locate them soon.

Also saw the interview on the news last night with the mom of the Naval Academy midshipman that died in the Amtrak crash.....so sad - he was only 20 years old. Please continue to pray for all the victims and their families.

My son's submarine sailed to Hawaii with him on it they all arrived at the same time Lol.  Hawaii is great, advise him to get a car so then he can socialize.  My son went to the submarine ball last week at the Hilton Wakiki Beach.

Congrates to your son bclmomct  One thin you know he will not deploy soon as they just got back like a week ago. Know someone else who has a sailor onboard.
