popeyesmomma and lilo54 Hello fellow Virginians. I live in the country NW of Richmond in Hanover County. My son just graduated prototype so he's a little further along then your sailors.Congratulations on A school graduation.

Vegemite didn't I love Lucy sell a concoction on her show it made me think of that anyways sounds gross.

It's Friday!!! yay! Happy Friday can't wait to see B's Friday picture perking us all up. It's the little things that lift me. :]

Oh Popeyesmomma - I had checked the Richmond flights too and there is no direct flight.  They all go to either Atl, Charlotte, Boston or even DC first!  I was going to have him come into Richmond and hang out with his sister on Friday night and then drive home on Saturday.  But it added several hundred dollars to the cost!  I always thought flights with stops were cheaper - go figure!

Comment by Lilo54 on April 30, 2015 at 6:55pm

BlancheMarie = yes we did look into train tickets.  Unfortunately, Amtrak only stops in Charleston twice a day - 10AM and 8Pm.  Needless to say, he can't take the 10AM on Friday and would have to wait until 10AM on Saturday and not get into the DC area until 6Pm and that doesn't count for train and track delays!  The 8 pm train gets into Quantico (close to us) at 4:30 in the AM.  My son took the train to meet us outside of Raleigh when we brought him his car.  That worked out well but it was four hours!  It is defintitely cheaper and we took advantage of the military discount.

Popeyesmomma - thanks for the offer .  My son wants to get home as soon as possible.  His sister lives in Richmond and is driving up on Saturday morning to spend the weekend.  His quote was "I want to get home as soon as possible!!!)  So, he plans to fly on Friday night.  Hopefully he already made his reservations.  I sent him flight info and it will cost under $300 which isn't too bad.  But, I haven't talked to him since last Sunday so I don't know the status!  I told him to check with his friends to see what other people are doing!  But I will take you up on the picture offer.  Since we can't use last names here, I will send you a friend request and then message you.  Congrats to your sailor too!!!

Hey Lilo54! Congrats to your sailor!

We also have a son who's graduating on the 15th. I would be happy to share pictures. We live in Richmond and your son is more than welcome to ride back with us if he doesn't want to/can't afford the flight. I have looked at prices for flights out of Charleston and they can be pricey. We'll probably leave on Sunday and the drive up 95 is around 8 hours (we stop every 2 - my husband gets blood clots).

Let me know and I'll send you my info, otherwise congrats and good luck with his flight!

I have a question.  We can't go to our sailor's A school grad on the 15th.  So, we are going to have him fly home instead.  Are there active duty military discounts for flying.  I didn't see any place to chose military in the websites.  Unfortunately, we didn't find out until recently that we couldn't go so I'm hoping the tickets aren't too expensive or worse yet, sold out!  He would be flying into Washington, DC airports.

Cerise - so glad to see your son is settled in.  You may have a hard time believing this but they really do settle in and take care of things pretty fast.  It's hard for us moms because we are just so used to having to help them when they are home that it seems like they are helpless when in fact they are quite capable.  Keep in mind that if he runs into a snag, you can still contact my son.

The Japanese yen both fascinates and baffles me. To have the base currency with so little value that it takes hundreds of them to add up to anything is interesting. Sounds like a pouch is a good idea for both Japan and Australia.

My son has collected money from Bahrain, Dubai and Australia for his family. His wife has some kind of plan to create a collectable thing for the kids. I'm not clear on what she plans to do but she is uber creative so it will probably be real cute. They say sons marry their mothers but I don't have the crafty gene.

Cerise, love to hear how things are progressing for your sailor. It's fun for me to contrast sub/surface and married/single. Sounds like he's getting it all figured out. I bet this is both exciting and frightening for him and you. I know my sailor shared some apprehension about leaving for his ship. He wasn't worried about the enemy; he was worried about new people, new environment, leaving the family. It's great now except for being away from his family. I think he is loving seeing the world.

B'sNuke, that pic cannot possibly be real. What a hoot!

NancyJo - Good to hear that the Vinson got a port visit in Australia.  I recently got back from a week in Japan, and the money is even more tilted towards coins.  There, the equivalent of our $1 and $5 bills are both coins instead of bills.  The common bills are a 1000 and 5000 Yen notes, roughly equivalent to a 10 and 50 dollar bill.  They have no equivalent to either a twenty or a quarter.  The Japanese typically carry a little pouch for their coins.

Hi all - Happy Thursday!

Cerise - glad to hear your son is settling in.  Hopefully you'll get a little more info lol!

Heather - I agree with everyone else - the 2nd honeymoon sounds wonderful - hope you have a fantastic time.  I'm sure it's well deserved for the both of you ;-)  It's great that you received an email from him too!  Now if only he would get yours!

That's a great picture J's/S'smom - thanks for sharing.  Definitely what we need to see more of - the good guys!

NancyJo - had to laugh at your comment!  Can just imagine your sailor leaving a trail of coins....

Catching up....  So, after Prototype graduation in BS 4/10/15, my husband and I drove home.  Nuke son had to work a few more days and get his ducks in a row up there, then he drove home too.  He had a ~10 day leave (not sure what counted as leave, that's why the ~) and Monday AM he started the drive to his new base, Groton.  After a night in a hotel, he kept trekking and made it to Groton safely.  I haven't talked to him yet, just a few FB Messenger messages.  He has a room, a room mate, there is a small kitchen with the room and bathroom.  Still not sure if they share the kitchen and bathroom with others and what's actually in the kitchen.  Also not sure if he has met the room mate yet.  :-)  As you can see I don't know much, but that is nothing new.  He's not big on communication.

During his time at home, he went through his room, cleaned out stuff, went through all his clothes, where most went in the "get rid of pile" (a few will go to younger (shorter/smaller) brother and the rest will get donated.  He did this before he left for boot camp, but this was a serious clean-out.

I'm hoping he'll enjoy his new place.  I'll keep you all updated as I learn more.
