William in Nashua - I was surprised by the number of chickens running loose in Maui when I visited there a few years ago.

The timing is good he completed a long school before we arrived then did 3 duty days in a row on the boat, and was going to meet us at Honolulu airport  Friday evening but got called back to work even while we were eating lunch in a restaurant Saturday. Our first three days in HI he got called into  work again getting home Sunday night at 1am and he had to drive to a different school Monday 6am.  Lol.

Just said goodbye to my son he i about to drive to school.  Then tonight after he finishes his scho we are going to a luao.  The first 3 weekend nights we were here he was called to the boat every night and got home after we were asleep.  This week he was in school 3 days then the rest of our stay he has leave.  Hawaii is a lot of fun the first photo I published was the view from his driveway of his house, ocean view property.  Lol.   Across the street is a beach.

Good job thinking ahead, Marixi. While in BC they get nothing but navy issue. At PIR, your new sailor will get liberty for that day which is precious. They have to be back though in the evening.

Most sailors will fly out the next day, but there is nothing set in stone for anybody so you will need to play this by ear. They leave for the airport in the early morning hours, some to O'Hare, some to Midway. Flights will be leaving all day. Most of us at least see our sailors before they board. When your sailor checks in you can ask if you can go through security to see him off at the gate.

They are issued a black backpack for carry-on to the plane so you can bring his phone and laptop along for him to shove in somewhere, providing you see him the next day. You probably will but again no guarantee.

They need distractions every now and then while in school. A lot of them are gamers, or find some way to entertain themselves. Don't worry that your sailor will slough off. He will learn quickly that that is a sure road to disaster and they will let him have it. You have a while before all this, though.

Thank you all for your words of wisdom and encouragement. It brought tears to my eyes thinking of how he may change. I want that so much for him, for him to have that confidence in himself and realize he's capable of so much more. We've told him for years that he has so much potential and there's no telling what he could do if he pushed himself. Also, I keep telling myself, no news is good news. However I can't help but jump up every time the phone rings thinking "what if it's him wanting to come home?" I want to bad for him to finish and move on to A school and beyond. I'm beyond excited when I think of what the future holds for him once finished with Nuke school.
We were planning on getting him a graduation gift. Any ideas? He had wanted a Nintendo 3DS for Christmas and we weren't able to swing it. Originally we were thinking it wouldn't be good to get him anything that distracted him from school, but now I'm thinking that if all the work is done in class and any time outside class is down time, then maybe it would be a good outlet for him. Another thing I'm wondering about is his laptop. There is a list of things he wanted us to bring to PIR and his laptop was one of them. Will I only be able to pass him these things at the airport when he leaves for A school or will he be able to get them prior?

B'sNukeMoM - Portsmouth is a great location!  I was born there when my Dad was in the Navy.  Left at 8 months old so I don't remember anything about it.  :)
