While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

My son will soon graduate from bootcamp and is headed to GC for nuke school next. I am curious in your opinion what all traits, accomplishments, attitudes, etc. were instrumental in your son's selection for STA-21. Obviously my son will have to make or break it on his own, but any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated at this stage to help keep him on the best path.

Comment by BunkerQB on October 17, 2014 at 1:42pm: Dear pink, congratulations. We know a young man who was selected for STA 21 more than 13 years ago. He joined the Navy right out of high school (family didn't have funds to send him to college). He re-up near the end of his 5 years and used his "shore time" to get an MBA from a very prestigious university in the West Coast. He'll stay in the Navy at least thru 20 years (he'll still be in his late 30s). He is not sure if he'll join the civilian ranks a that point but he will have an incredible education and career accomplishments. If you can get in, this is one heck of a program.

Comment by pink on October 17, 2014 at 1:32pm: I am so excited for my son! He just found out that he was picked up for the STA-21. (Sailor to Admiral). In a condensed explanation, he will be paid by the Navy at his current rank to attend college for nuclear, then he will serve 5 years as an officer in the USN. I am so proud!!! I think it's kind of like an ROTC program for those who are currently in the Navy and want to become an officer. There were only 50-some sailors in the entire Navy that were selected this year.

Comment by Cerise on October 17, 2014 at 12:44pm: TJ Proudnukemom, I don't know if I consider myself an experienced Navy mom, but we chose to go to BC graduation, skipped the A school graduation which was in December for my son. He was coming home for 2 weeks for the holidays so we all agreed on not going to the A school graduation. Then we went to the Power school graduation, which I recommebd you go to, if at all possible. My son is now in Prorotype, just started this week. He's up in Ballston Spa.

If you can attend, you should to love on your sailor. Everyone graduated promoted to petty officer. Be very proud of your sailors!

Yes, we were planning on the two weeks and then he just told us they changed. Thanks for the info about timing between A and power. My sailor I think put us on a need to know basis. But I get to see him next week! So It will be better face to face.

I am assuming that in addition to the BC graduation there are graduations for every phase of Nuke school. Which graduation(s) would you experienced Moms recommend we attend?

Comment by Riley's mom on October 17, 2014 at 11:33am: Happy Friday! I'm going to go visit my sailor next week! YAY!!. My husband and I are renting a condo in the Isle of Palms area. Any one that has had stayed there have any advice? My son graduates A school in January right after his Christmas break. He mentioned because of the graduation date they don't get a full two weeks off, has anyone heard this also? Does anyone have a son graduating A school in January?

Don't worry about your sailors finding friends and working things out. One thing the navy does is prepare our kids to be able to work things out, and the common experience of navy life goes a long way to finding good friends. The sailors help each other too. I know my son has been in contact with friends he made that are already in San Diego about housing and what not. It's very reassuring.
