I am so excited; we fly out to GC for my daughters A school graduation. One happy mom here.

Hey, Eric's mom, My son has made it through both A and Power, now in Prototype, and really hasn't had the stellar grades of others, but, I'm proud that he has passed.  While he was in A school and struggling, I asked him to describe how the material is presented and how they study at the Rickover.  He explained that the presentation is that they receive a packet with information, and lots of blank lines to fill in.  The instructors present the material in PowerPoint format with the words for the missing blanks.  They then are expected to follow along, filling in the blanks in their packet.

There may be some different units that are presented alternative ways, but this is the primary mode of instruction.  For my kiddo, I knew that this was about the worst way for him to learn.   We then talked about study strategies.  I'm a huge advocate for people understanding their own study styles and that there is no pat answer.  He then shared that in evening study times there are three options for reviewing the material:  1) study in absolute silence in a quiet room 2) meet with an instructor for individual enrichment for concepts that are confusing or 3) group study sessions.  He had primarily been using option 1; I told him "Noooo!" -- you are probably falling asleep.  He's a social learner.  If he can talk about something, or teach the concept, he's mastered it.  Anyway, he changed up his study location and scores improved.  Ultimately, my suggestion is:

  • While instructors are presenting, do more than just fill in the blanks.  Mentally ask questions or form mental pictures, or even use ridiculous mnemonics.  (I don't know if they can jot notes or pictures in the sidelines, etc.)
  • Ask him to think about how he learns best and spend the majority of the time utilizing that method.
  • Engage in the extra activities available to sailors OR get off base if this is an option.  I think this helps to keep a refreshing and healthy overall perspective.

CO-Twin she goes to CSU in Fort Collins but we visited 5 colleges from Colorado Springs to Greeley, it was my first time in CO and its beautiful! Safe travels. My son's first day of classes was yesterday. I'm learning a lot from all of you nuke moms!

Also my son said, "They are investing so much in us they want us to succeed. If I struggle, I say something and the instructor will meet me early and help me out."

NavyMom where does you daughter go to school?

I am excited to get busy with this process. I will be on the road by 6AM

Comment by CO-TwinSalorsMom on September 3, 2014 at 10:48pm

Mine did not do well on the first test and I think he said then they got a heads up from the instructor how to study. They can choose a study buddy and it is wise to pick someone you like that is ahead of you. Also mine said he would stare at the text until he could see it in his head and then he was able to recall the text verbatim during a test.

My agent said it was safe to break out the champagne  It closes on 9-26 and we will pay $1000 to stay for October. My non-nuke sailor is coming home on leave in October and it gives his the opportunity to say goodbye to his childhood home and to make arraignments for all his stuff. He was emotional and so was I.

Tomorrow I drive the 5 hours to Boulder to look for a new home. The Navy are giving me a loan and they are having me work with a navy relocation real estate agent!! That is a big answer to prayer. School starts Nov 10th.

Prototype is very different from the A school and Power School. Any words of wisdom on how to pass prototype?
Comment by kfguay on September 3, 2014 at 8:11pm
Eric's Mom- my son used the flash card technique in A School. In Power School he switched to a mini wipe board. He loved it and it helped him tremendously. Maybe this will help your son as well.
