OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Can anyone recommend a motel and can I get a military discount? Is there such a thing as a military disc. On plane tickets for family? Any help would be appreciated.

Comment by kfguay on August 12, 2014 at 11:03pm: In regards to time off at Christmas, my son had just graduated A School on Dec 6th, but his class did not get leave until Dec 28th. He was home until Jan. 6th. Don't know how they decide, but as others have said, it's not a given they will be home for Christmas. As I have learned, in the military, nothing is a given and info is given when they are ready to give it. My son didn't find out until late Nov what is time off would be. Refundable tickets are the way to go!

Comment by SoCal_Sailor_Dad on August 12, 2014 at 10:04pm: @GRU - If I were to take a GUESS (and that's exactly what I'm doing,) I'd guess that, based on last year's dates, the holiday stand-down will be from Dec 19 at 17:00 to Jan 5 at 0800.

However, I wouldn't buy tickets yet. I'd wait until your sailor finds out for sure what days he or she will have off, or buy refundable tickets. Some students will get the whole time off, but some will get only the first half or the second half (and I think a few didn't get any time off, but I'm not 100% sure of that.)

My son didn't find out for certain what days he'd have off last year until around mid-October, and that's when we bought his tickets. I know, it sucks because airfare is so expensive at that time of year. He wanted 10-11 days home, and wanted to be back 2 days before classes resume so he could re-acclimate and study. We saved $200 by having him fly out on Sunday instead of Saturday.

You didn't ask, but if they don't have enough leave days accumulated, they can go into negative leave for the holidays, and pay it back as they accrue it.

He wants to apply for officer training. He seems to know all about how to go about that, and I didn't want to ask him too much, but is there a group or site here where I could learn more about the process. I like to know what I'm talking about when I talk with him and other!

I did send my son something that went to the Rickover and he got comments from his instructor. I used to have an Art Supply store and he requested a 20 pen set of micro tip permanent colored pens. He used them to draw out circuits. the colors helped map it out. They are expensive but I only paid half cause it was my store. They are tiplus pens that are .03 tip.

Comment by Mark on August 11, 2014 at 4:54pm: Calculators are like golf equipment - never buy one for somebody without knowing for sure it's exactly what they want. Power school does not demand a fancy calculator, and as Christy said, some will not be allowed. There are a lot of little differences between brands that can be frustrating to get used to - letting them pick one up at the NEX is a great idea. 15$ will get them all the calculator they will need
