We are from New Hampshire and the entire duration my son has been in the Navy his car has had NH tags on it, despite his being stationed in 3 different states. That includes the year he lived in Goose Creek, 6 months in Ballston Spa, and all the time since then at his submarine base. His drivers license is also NH.

By the way in our state, automobile registration and drivers license renewal is free of charge for active duty military.

yes i am joined to that site and they did answer some of it but i was just wondering why he would be told that he has A school in chicago when it does not work that way and by what they are saying i can move with him ext . so i hope so and thank you

Ruby, you can probably find the answer to that from this group: http://www.navyformoms.com/group/nukewives

The decision to register has to made case by case.  When I was in the military I bought my car in Hawaii.  Registering it in my home state was not an option due to distance.  My son plans on buying a car at the end of 'A' school here in PA, and keeping it registered here.  If he were to buy it in SC, and then go to Ballston Spa, as I understand it, he'd have to re-register it anyway, since SC is not his homestate.  When I bought my car in Hawaii, and then transferred to San Diego, I had to re-register and have it inspected  it in California.

Comment by Colleen in PA on May 29, 2013 at 1:25pm

Ryan's mom, we live in Pa and when my son was in GC he did not have to register his car there or get another driver's license.  His insurance is with USAA and he just called and told there where he is and they change the policy to reflect the area he lives in.  He did that for prototype in NY and now for Va where he is stationed.

Comment by Ruby12 on May 29, 2013 at 1:25pm

oh ok because of that will they move famililys down with them then

Comment by Adam'sProudMom on May 29, 2013 at 1:23pm

Yes, Ruby and Irene, all nukes go to Goose Creek, SC, (near Charleston) for A school and Power School. The third phase of their training, Prototype, will be either in Goose Creek, SC, or Balston Spa, NY.

I think the only A- school for nuke is Goose Creek Sc. That is where my son who is a nuke is at. He recently got married and was allowed to move into married housing. Let me tell you this housing is nice. He was able to move right in without a waiting list. The married housing is on base. About 4 miles from the school.

RyansMum - I emailed the DMV in Charleston when my son got to Goose Creek and was informed by them that as he is on active duty he will not need to get a new license or register his vehicle there.  Each state is different regarding active duty military but most do not require the member to change the registration of their vehicle or get a new license.  (I had the same home of record drivers license for the entire 20 years I was in the Navy.)
