Today my son turned 24 - can't wait to see him on March 8 for his Power School Graduation.

Connie, MN mom, J's mom, and William:  thank you for the advice as positive comments.  William, my son isn't trying to be third in the class, he hasn't been studying since power school started! and, he is getting off base every chance he gets.  I think he feels brain washed, washed out, stressed out...you name it!  His feelings about the program vascillate on a daily basis.

I appreciate all of the thoughts and comments I always see on this page, even though I do not respond much!

Sammylee, his PIR is 3/8

Thank you all so much!  We too were warned, by our son's recruiter, that there could be sour grapes because nukes have a few more opportunities.  Guess I just didn't expect it to start in BC! LOL

Especially liked Williams comments about the bellyaching...they just need to suck it up already! LOL

Comment by William in Nashua on February 2, 2013 at 3:50pm

Sammylee, that sort of bellyaching about where you have to work on the ship as a nuke and how deprived of fresh air & sunshine you get, could only come from a carrier nuke Lol. That is right up there with the Starbucks on the carrier does not taste as good as the one in Seattle, or the pay phones cost too much, or the ships store ran out of Snickers candy, or the Internet on the carrier is too slow.

Comment by Maddie on February 2, 2013 at 3:43pm
Sammylee, one thing I noticed is that nukes are not very popular among the other sailors so sometimes the negatives are being highlighted and even exaggerated. I was told by many that nuke school brainwashed them, messed with their minds, etc. scared the heck out of me but I can say for certain that it does not. My son graduated from Prototype yesterday and he's still the kid who left for BC a couple of years ago. The nukes get promoted sooner and get special perks and bonuses compared to the other ratings so we can't blame the others for a bit of sour grapes. Lol.

Sammylee, my son is on Enterprise and a Nuke, electricians mate. For Nukes, there are 2 choices, carriers or subs.  He went to BC almost 3 yrs ago on Jan 25.  He joined Enterprise in Dec. 2011 and deployed the following March.  They were gone 8 mos.  Everyone gets time off to sightsee while in port unless you are in trouble.  Most of Nathan's port calls lasted about a week, give or take.  He always had a couple days off ship.  They usually had to be back by a certain time and had liberty buddies.  In Italy, they were allowed overnight liberty!    He likes his job.  His work area is in the middle of the ship, I know because I was on the last Tiger Cruise.  A lot of the sailors work inside! There are no windows. On a carrier, there isn't much area to get outside besides the flight deck.  There is space at the rear of the ship to be outside and in the hanger, when the doors are open you get see outside.  I don't know if they can go on the flight deck unless they work up there. I know you can up around the control tower to watch planes.

Sunshine66 - my sons BC PIR is scheduled for March 22nd.  When is yours?

Comment by Sunshine66 on February 2, 2013 at 2:31pm
I would love to hear about that as well. My son is also in BC but heading to GC in March. I'm worried about his choice to become a Nuke.
