Emily - my heart goes out to you.  My son is an EM assigned to a sub.  He has just a little over a year until he can get out, and even with the reenlistment bonuses is not in the least bit interested.  He is single, and said he was not interested in looking for a girlfriend - "this is no life for a family".  He has recently reconnected with an aquaintance from 7 years ago and they have been "talking", he has seen her for a weekend in October, parts of 4 days at Thanksgiving and off and on for two weeks over Christmas.  We love her and hope things work, but I know this upcoming underway is going to be especiallly hard on them.  Don't know how much communication you have with Aaron, but we only heard from him twice (several short lines in an e-mail) the last time he was out for 10 weeks.  At least now, he can see the end in sight, but this was not at all what he thought.  He was 22 when he went in, but just not focused in college.  Prayers to you and Aaron.  I have "seen" you on here since you were just a senior in high school.  You are lucky that you are in school and stay busy, but I know it can't be easy, and trying to keep up the encouragement for Aaron and your own spirits has to be hard.  I admire you!! Hang in there.

My son just arrived in Charleston and he is wanting to buy a new cell phone and switch service providers.  Do any of you know which cell provider is best for the Charleston area?  He wants a plan that does not require a contact.

What  do  you  mean  so  many  are  being  taken  out  of  the  program? At  what  point?

It is comforting to know that my sailor is not the only one who gets discouraged.  It hurts to hear him being so down in the dumps.  I try to encourage him but am also running out of things to say.  It does not help for him to find out that so many are being taken out of the program.  As parents we want to make everything better for our children.  I am afraid this is something we cannot do for them.  All we can do is keep coming up with encouraging words, which is getting harder and harder to do.

My  son  was  in  the  pre-fill  class for  Nov but  was  not on  the  final  list.  I too  worry  how  much will  be  forgotten.  I  also wonder  how  they  pick  who  is  going  to  class  up  when. He  told me some of  the  kids that  graduated after him  are in  the  class starting  Monday. So  it  isn't who  has  been  waiting  the  longest.

Wow 8-10 months hold time is a long time between power school and prototype.  You would think they might forget some of the stuff that they learned.  I can't believe that some haven't started yet that graduated last July.  My son graduated last July but he started prototype in November after Thanksgiving and will graduate in May.

William,  From  what  he  says there  are  quite  a  few  in  his position. One sailor  that  lives in  his  development is  starting school  Monday  after  waiting  10  months.And  yes he  enjoys  his  paycheck-  seems  to  be   buying   a lot of  gadgets for  his  Jeep.

Emily, I think my enthusiasm is about as good as yours. I talked to my son last night and he is down in the dumps. I try to be his biggest cheerleader and I am running out of things to say.

And I know they come to us to vent and yes he is a good attitude type of guy! And the hardest worker and strongest person I know!!!!!

My husband has been on his carrier for over a year now... And the only time he's seen the flight deck was when he landed on it joining the ship mid-deployment. 

Your sons and daughters after Prototype will be well tucked away under the ship rarely seeing the light of day (no, but seriously. I'm pretty sure Aaron only sees the sunlight if he works out before going to bed for the day... they work nights out in the fifth fleet).
