Navy/ArmyMom, Thank you for the information and, especially, the advice. I'm happy to hear you had such a good visit and that it is a positive, upbeat place for our kids to spend the next year and a half or so. :)

awesome Navy/Army mom. Thanks so much.

And I guess my real question is which taxis do others recommend?

Amanda I'll send you a message tomorrow and give you some details which I believe might help you. That's wonderful that you're going!

has anyone who has visited know any tips or tricks for flights? are there any surrounding airports that are cheaper to fly into? and are there any shuttle/taxi services from the airport to base?
It's my first trip there and I'll be traveling alone.
Thanks!

Hi Everyone! We had a wonderful visit to Goose Creek this weekend, and I thought I would report back. The Quality Inn on Red Bank Rd. (3 minutes from the base) was fine. It was very clean and the staff were outstanding. The only problem is the train which is very noisy and particularly busy on Friday nights. Not so bad on Saturday night. The beds were very comfortable and really, I would stay there again. Military rate is $69.00/night. It's not super fancy, but it is fine.

Breakfast was excellent and very reasonable at Alex;s Restaurant. Three minutes from the Quality Inn. Take a right out of the Quality Inn and it's right down Red Bank Rd. on your right.

We had dinner in downtown Charleston (really fun) at Wild Wings. Excellent food, fun atmosphere and five of us ate dinner along with two desserts for $100.00, not including the tip. Getting downtown is very easy. Try to get there an hour or so before you eat so you can browse or shop a little in the unique little shops. It's not your typical downtown at all.

Goose Creek is nice, very sunny (it was HOT) and has a beachy feeling. It's an upbeat atmosphere around Goose Creek, lots of sunshine and it reminds me a lot of a swampy north Florida type of a place. There's lots of nature. Bring shorts and sandals and sunscreen too. You'll just want to be in your shorts and sandals, Bring sunglasses. Drink lots of water.

The only part that I hated was saying goodbye to our son. Today is a very hard day. We had such a nice visit, but being apart again is extremely difficult.

They're working very hard between classes and studying. I bet they are so happy to take a little break on Saturdays. Even then they might have to study for at least a part of the day.

The most comforting thing to me was the fact that that it is a nice and cheerful place. God bless them all. What they're doing isn't easy at all. They have a lot of stress to deal with.

I wish I could have an instant replay of this past weekend. If I had it to do it over again, I would leave the dog at home, and just sit quietly talking with our son.

If you go to visit, be sure not to spend too much time sight seeing because after it's over you will look back and just cherish the time during the visit when you were just talking with your son, daughter, husband or wife more than anything about the entire trip.

Thanks Catie, I'm way more excited now to start the moving process.. he graduates April 30th I believe, so I hope it comes quicker! And I pretty much relied on the recruiter for a lot of my info, and of course that didn't help me any to be honest.. and I've talked to a few guys in the Nuke program and all it did was scare me.. so I'm thankful to hear it from the spouse's viewpoint.. that makes me feel 100% better!

My daughter graduated from boot camp on Friday (19Mar) and is coming to Charleston on Tuesday, along with a lot of other nukes-to-be. Now that we've survived boot camp, we're curious to know what A-school will be like.
