My son begins OCS Sunday 5, 2010. He just told us that he will have two weeks break at the Holidays.  He would rather not fly back to Washington State . . . ready to move on.  Can anyone tell me if they can stay on base and what he would do there during the vacation?

Hi Manette: Sorry I can't answer your question but I noticed you were from Washington State and I see your picture looks like it is in Martin Stadium! We also are a Washington State family and my son graduated from WSU last year and I graduated from WSU in 1983. Where in Washington do you live? We are from Edmonds. My son is in the 04-11 class so he started Oct. 2nd. He is coming home for the two week break and then we are all flying out to Newport for his graduation on Jan. 7th. He got a pilot slot so he will come home to pack up his stuff and then he will be heading to Pensacola for flight school. What is your son's designation? Congratulations to you on this big step in his life. My son said it is the hardest thing he's ever done but the reward will be greater than the pain.
HI! I graduated from WSU 1974 and my son last December Civil Engineering. We live in Bothell. We are so close we should connect in Edmonds for coffee or other beverage. He will meet our son in Newport for sure. We don't know his final destination, but it is with the Civil Engineering Corps. So, he will be in Southern California after OCS for 14 weeks. What a wonderful opportunity!!!!!!!! Let's connect!
Go Cougs!!!!

Hi!  I heard that you met my daughter-in-law last week!  What a smalll world . . . we need to make a time to meet for coffee.  My business schedule is pretty light the next two weeks, so that would be a great time.  My LO is in 07-11.  Talked to him Friday and he said he thought he recognized your son, but could talk to him.  Maybe further into his training.

A really small world! I am convinced that we are destined to meet each other.  My LO arrived home yesterday and looks great.  He knows your LO now.  My work schedule is also very light over the next two weeks so I would love to meet you for coffee.  I have a lot of company this week so what about next Monday?  I ride a horse that I lease in Woodinville on Monday mornings and I could meet you in Bothell after my ride.

So sorry this has taken so long to answer.  I have been swamped at work and have a little sister who is expecting her second son anytime.  Once he arrives (hope this week and they live in Goldendale Cougs as well) I will have the time to have coffee.  My email is:  amblersue@hotmail.com.  Please write to me there and we can arrange a time to meet.   Happy New Year!

Sue

Hi:

Sorry I can't answer your question. When I talk to my son I will ask if he knows if the base will be open. I would assume so. Newport is a neat town and area. One family took the train into NYC while they were there. We explored Newport and took the Cliff Walk. Not sure guys are so much into shops, but lots of good pubs and restaurants. We were there for graduation just 3 weeks ago and enjoyed the time. Our son finishes SWO school there on the 17th and will be home for a few days before reporting to Everett Washington. He's taking a train out so will be on the train on Christmas Day. I know nothing about the area, but it looks beautiful. Is your son prior enlisted or new to the Navy. Good luck to him and you as he starts this new adventure.
Debbie B. We live very close to Everett and the Naval Station here. If he has leave that he can spend time with a Navy family and one who would love him as our own we would love to spend anytime with him when he is here. We did find out that he is able to stay on base at Newport for the holidays. Thank you for your best wishes. We feel so blessed to have this new family! Happy Holiday and please let me know if he would like to spend some after Christmas time with a fun family.
Manette: Thanks for the offer! I will definitely let him know and we may be contacting you with questions about the area. Hope your son enjoys his time in Newport during the holidays!
Last year there were a number of OC's that had to stay on base. Not exactly sure what they did, but if your son doesn't want to leave, there should be a place for him to stay.
Thanks! He will be staying on base. We are so excited for him!
