Here's a question for when they finish OCS. Can anyone tell me if officers wear their uniforms when attending civilian weddings? My son's twin sister is getting married next June, and I'm wondering if he can wear his dress whites. He shouldn't compete with the bride since he'll sit with family. This is all new territory.

I hope everyone gets great phone calls today!! Haven't been on here much this weekend because DF surprise visited me! He was able to take a couple of days of leave to visit me at school so I could see him before he deploys- what a great guy ;) I love having my sailor home, even if it's just for a day or two. It's been his first time in our home state for the last half a year, so it's definitely a treat for him too!!
Anyway, DF has had a lot of fun looking at the website and seeing things from the LO's point of view- I think he understands a little better about what I went through now ;). DF said that soon OCS will start their new indoc process- sometime in October or November, indoc week will become three weeks of indoc instead of just the one- thank goodness our guys didn't have to do it, but I'm sure the new guys will handle it just fine :)
Hopefully 01 will get their cell phones as soon as they become candi-o's... the last two classes did not, and I know it was a huge disappointment for us when we had to wait an extra week for them! Let's all hope they've gone back to the old policy of giving them cell phones right away!

Don't worry Denise- people stick around after their LO"s have graduated to help out. Marsbars and I are both from 27 and our guys graduated a couple of weeks ago, and we're still on here giving our two cents worth ;)

I am so sad to hear about Brenton :( But as most of you know, I'm familiar with how DOR's work since DF DOR'ed in his first week. However, he decided to go back, and it sounds like that isn't the case for Brenton. I do know that the navy will not let him go until he has a plan, another job lined up- he will stay in Rhode Island in the student pool until the CO is comfortable that he has made the right decision and that he will be successful in another career field. Trust me, the staff up there are wonderful when on OC has made this decision and will help him.
There was a guy who DOR'ed out of DF's class in the 11th week. Everyone was shocked, but it is much easier to DOR and get out of OCS instead of trying to get out once they have reached the fleet. I think it is important to realize what a difficult decision it is to DOR and to commend those who make the decision that is best for their personal well being. I will certainly be praying that he finds his new career path soon so that he can come home to his family where he needs to be right now.

They sell really awesome bumper stickers at Hi Mom's that say "Get On Your Face!!!" and then 'navy ocs' underneath. DF's mom bought me one :D. (of course, DF's DI also high fived me because earlier in the week I put DF on his face for sassing me before grad practice ;) ).
They may not like it now, but I promise, at Hi Mom's, they will all be laughing and joking about the times they got beat... I promise!

03-10 mom here. Thanks to Navymominohio for sending me messages about the class & my son, and tonight I'm getting caught up with all the news. Its snowing here on the Yukon, but I was able to get to another village on the last flight of the day. As I've been flying on these little puddle-jumpers landing on airstrips wherever there's a solid or flat piece of ground, I've been trying to imagine what its like to land and take off from a carrier. I know that's what some of our LO's want to do, mine included. It's also like the military cause you do a lot of waiting and sometimes end up in a destination you didn't plan on right then, like tonight, but that's what makes it interesting. I'm hoping to make it home in time for Sunday calls. Good luck 04's on Thursday.

Oh- and Boston's airport is about an hour and twenty minutes from Newport, if there's no traffic. If you're flying in sometime during the last week, a lot of times your LO will be able to get special liberty to come pick you up :)

Yeah make sure that your LO has his or her camera with them for when they sign their commissioning papers!!

The run is definitely not a mile and a half, I'd say it's about a mile, that's about what Tim said it was too- and there's actually a shorter route they've taken with some classes. It's really not bad at all, I promise :)

Oh... and not sure if this was just for class 27, but our guys said we were not allowed to go up to their rooms with them to get their things- they said no civilians past the quarterdeck, unless you wanted to be put into the next class to be indoc'ed ;). Our run was supposed to be at 4:30 in the morning and breakfast at 5:30, so it seems a little earlier than it used to be :)
