My son is starting in November, do they get leave overChristmas?

Hello, & congrats to your son on selection to OCS! I know that OCS takes 2 weeks off during Christmas & New Years but my son was there in 2020, so they had to stay put because of the pandemic. I believe they usually get some leave but maybe someone who has been there more recently can give more details to you.

Have you been able to find your son's class FB group for family & friends? That can be a great source of information. You can also ask to join the class or 2 before his. This can provide info of what's ahead & most groups don't mind allowing people to join for this reason. Try searching FB with "Navy OCS Class _ _ - 24 Family & Friends", inserting his class number in the spaces. Here's a couple links that might help also if you haven't already found them:

OCS website

OCS Facebook page

J71792, here are the FB OCS groups that I found for graduating classes in 2024:

OCS class 05-24

OCS class 06-24

Your son's class may not have a FB group yet. Many times the candidates have a group for themselves to help with questions prior to leaving for OCS & then sometimes that same group changes into the Family & Friends (F&F) group or other times a new group is formed. You can start that F&F group yourself. I did for my son's class since there wasn't already one. I wasn't knowledgeable about OCS at the time but that doesn't matter if you're wondering about that. :) Others will find the group & then information can be shared. I found it to be very helpful. Best wishes!

My son was there last Christmas.  They got two weeks without classes (roughly Dec, 23 - Jan. 6 - but they will tell you).  Of those, they had the option of taking one week as leave and going home (or wherever) and had liberty on the base for the other week.  They could choose which week.  If they took leave, it counted against their leave, but since they accumulate leave while there, we didn't find that was much of an issue.

Hi Sherry,

When they ‘have liberty’, are they allowed to leave base at all during the day? Just wondering if we were staying in the area, would our son be able to spend time with us off base even if he had to stay in base in the evenings?

I am not sure what ‘liberty’ actually consists of!

Also, do they do anything for the them in terms of celebrating the holidays if they stay on base?

Thanks!
