Haha marsbars I see you finally got your internet ;)

Yesterday we absolutely had a fantastic time out on the town- nothing beats the feeling of showing off your guy in their uniform! You get looks from everyone- one guy even made a comment to my DF as we walked past, thanking him for his service. It was really nice :). Downtown was SO crowded but we were lucky to find a nice place that was able to seat us very quickly, especially with as big of a group as we had!

When dropping off DF for grad practice today, we saw a couple of the other classes coming in and out- one class was marching ahead of me (and marsbars was right behind ;) ) on the road. The DI screamed "Get off the road right now!" It was funny to see how the guys all scrambled for the side. The DI then, ever so politely, waved us through. It made me chuckle to see the DI being a gentlemen for the ladies in the cars ;)

Most of the OC's don't know, but not all of the DI's left town... a few have been popping in and making sure they haven't been slacking TOO much! I know one of the DI's did take leave and actually left to go run a marathon, but a few of the others have been in and out all weekend. They wanted to make sure everyone wasn't slacking TOO much while they were away... but it seems like they wanted them to have a chance to unwind a bit because of the holiday. I know over the 4th of July they did the same thing. I went to drop DF off just before 6:30 this morning after he had some overnight liberty and sure enough, I saw three classes out heading to the chow hall (one of them almost ran over DF's car ;) ). So, they're still going strong and going at it! ;)

The DI's are due to make their official return sometime today... not sure when, not even the candi-o's know- I think they wanted to surprise the regiment ;) I'll keep my fingers crossed that all of your LO's will get a chance to get a phone call or at least an email in before then! :)

The "official rumor" as our guys like to put it ;) is that when Class 28-09 graduate, those that are awaiting SWOS (which is in Newport) or are waiting for another school will stay behind and essentially do the job of the candi-o's until class 01-10 reaches that point. Unfortunately at the end of the fiscal year there is usually a gap, but at least it'll give those guys waiting to go to school something to do :)

As far as locking in a graduation date- there really is no for sure set time that is "safe" to secure a graduation date. Injuries and illness can unfortunately occur at any time. Most people say after RLP it is safe to start making grad plans- however DF's class had a few people roll in and out after this point. The general guideline is that once they hit candi-o phase (week 9), you are 100% safe to make graduation plans. However, there was one person in DF's class who DOR'ed just last week in week 11- but this is very very uncommon, there's no one in recent memory who has done this, and that's a personal decision. I think the last time anyone rolled from his class was a few weeks before that.
We made graduation plans around week 7- it gave us enough time to still not be paying huge amounts of money for stuff but we also felt that DF was going to graduate as scheduled. But like I said, they never officially lock in a graduation date.

Oh... and as DF pointed out- the reason most they fail most guys the first time is because then there is not enough time for them to individually prepare for it again. It's essential that the guys learn to come together as a team to overcome failure. So this will force them to come together as one unit to get their guys passed. It happens with every class. It's all part of the training process. Everything is designed to teach them something :)

Hi everyone-
I just wanted to offer some words of encouragement about the RLP situation. Most people do not pass the first time- it's a mental thing. I was talking to my DF and he wanted me to share his story with you guys to offer a bit of encouragement. My DF actually DOR'ed in his first week. He went back, then was rolled into H again. So, it took us about a month to get through week 1. When he hit RLP time, he was failed right away because he had DOR'ed- they wanted to see what his reaction would be and if they could get him to DOR again (most people who DOR and come back DOR again). But, like I said, most people DO NOT pass RLP first time around. He passed the reinspect with no problems. The fact that your guys' reinspect is on Tuesday is GOOD news- this will give them extra time to get ready!
The moral of the story is that this is all just a lot of mind games. They intentionally fail them to get reactions because they're going to face situations like this as officers. DF wanted me to share his story because it shows that even if the worst case scenario comes up, and your LO decides to DOR, they CAN come back and they CAN make it through!!
Try not to get discouraged about the RLP situation- I promise almost all will pass inspect and even if they don't, it's not the end of the world- it just means a bit of time in H to get ready to pass again and then life moves on. In the long run, what's an extra week or two of training?
Hang in there- I know it is a long, tough road, believe me, but it's well worth it when you're finally up here and graduation is right around the corner :) It will be here before you know it!

I'm still trying to figure out who to root for ;) I'm actually up in Newport right now visiting (DF graduates next weekend and I came up a bit early to be able to visit with him ;) ) So I compromised by wearing my OSU shorts and one of DF's class shirts- I figure either way, I can't complain about who wins! (although walking around a navy base in OSU gear may be a bad idea today... ;) )

I was over at the chow hall for lunch and was able to see a lot of the classes- everyone looks tired but they're all holding up well! The newest class looks like they're getting better at eating with their spoons ;). Welcome Aboard for Class 04-10 went well this morning!
Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend! :)

VAK, yes, I'm Kyle's mom. If I knew the family name of Emily's friend at SMU maybe I'd recognize him, especially if they'd been here a while. There are about 80,000 people in the area, too big to know everyone. Enjoy your vacation!
McSwain & VAK, you could substitute any kind of game to keep in spirit with the moose jerky, or beef tastes about the same. The smoked salmon would be the easiest to find. Now I need to go back and find everyone else's favorite food again, all I can remember is chicken pot pie!

Hi, I'm a 3-10 mom whose been learning as I've been reading everyone's posts. Thanks. First phone calls today, heard no one from the class has quit, but there may be some medical issues. Good luck to all.
Oh, who said Texas is cold in winter? Come visit us in Alaska in another month or two! Sorry, I couldn't help laughing.
To add to the earlier food lists, if we could send care packages, my son's favorite food items would be smoked salmon and moose jerky. He sure liked getting his dad's packages in college.
