Tripoli, I can't believe what a small world it is.  You were the only one I chatted with on this site for our recruits division and out of 100+ in their division, they seem to be good buddies.  When we finally got a chance to talk, Cody was telling me story and mentioned Tripoli.  I told him I recognized that name and sure enough it was you.  I met your daughter online last night while on Skype with my son.  I hope to make it to Pensacola and meet you.

mmiles 11/186:  One more thing.  PAY ATTENTION TO WEATHER REPORTS!!!!  I thought it was going to be warmer than it was and only brought short sleeved shirts and gauze skirts.  I had one pair of jeans which I ended up wearing for 3 days.  The day of PIR the wind chill had the temp around 39 degrees!  That was the coldest I had ever been in my life.  Be sure to be prepared for whatever kind of weather could pop up.

mmiles 11/186:  We did not have access to a rental car (a family member rode us around).  Friday morning we had to leave the hotel at 2:30 am to go to O'Hare to drop off the infamous "black bag".  I had read on here about a taxi driver named Sarge.  He owns a taxi company and drives a green & yellow van.  I pre-arranged a 2:30 am pickup with him for Friday morning.  We had no idea about flight numbers or anything; let me tell you what that kind man did.  He called the USO to find out if my son was there (that was our pre-arranged meeting place).  He wasn't.  The USO gave him information that the bus he was arriving on was going to Midway airport first so they would be dropped off afterward.  His plane was leaving at 6:05 am.  Sarge got all the information necessary for us to meet up with our sailor.  He took us to the correct area of the airport and even told us what door he would be coming in (he was off by 2 doors but we still saw when my sailor walked in!).  They checked their sea bags and garment bags.  We went to the counter with him and asked about a pass to follow them to their gate.  We got our gate pass and was taken through a priority security checkpoint (didn't have to wait in the extremely long line with everyone else).  We followed our sailor all the way to the gate and sat and visited with him.  It was wonderful spending that extra time with him as we only had Thursday afternoon with him.  We stayed there until the plane boarded.  I texted Sarge and told him we were ready to leave.  He told us where to meet him in detail; we went to that area of the airport and he pulled right up to us.  My point is this:  Sarge went above and beyond the call of duty to be sure that we hooked up with our sailor by making numerous phone calls until he found out all the information we needed to see him off.  He even found out where he was flying to (Boston) which we didn't even know.  My son then took a bus to Groton, CT which was his final destination.  I would recommend Sarge to everyone I know.  No other taxi driver would have done all that he did for us.  He is retired from the Army and really wants to take care of the Navy families.  We were shafted by a couple of other taxi drivers which is why I would ask for him by name.  His personal cell is 847-212-0246.  Tell him a Navy mom recommended him.  If you use him and like the service you get, pass it on to another parent.

PIR was amazing.  We were traveling from CA and left late on Wed so we could work that day.  I would NOT recommend that as our 5:30 flight got delayed due to bad weather and we did not arrive at our hotel until 4:30 am on the day of PIR!  Very stressful.  We picked up or SR after he moved his stuff and went out to dinner.  Friday we saw a movie and then he took a nap and then dinner again.  Sat we took him and two buddies Phillip J. and Brandon N. to Chicago with us and went to Navy Pier, had lunch and did some shopping.  The boys were great, then we dropped them at the train station to get back to base and we headed to the air port.  When I go back in August I will arrive a day early for sure, and I will stay at a different hotel, maybe a little nicer and located between the airport and the base.  Other than that, it was great!

Mmiles: your almost there! If you are renting a car and coming to/from Ohare, there are tons of toll roads (5-6). We got a toll pass at the rental counter so we didn't have to stop and pay cash. Also, the entrance you want into RTC is Ohio street. It wasn't too bad for us cause there were only 7 divisions graduating.

Graduation was wonderful, spent all day Friday in downtown Chicago with my son and had Brunch with him, my other son and his girlfriend Saturday morning,  Then we left to come back to Michigan.  I hated to leave him but he has already done 2 watches so the he has phase 2  Liberty by next weekend.  He can leave the base at any time after that with a buddy.  He will be traveling back to Chicago tomorrow for a Memorial Day cook-out with his brother.  RTC certainly has turned out some fine Sailors.  I did see OMG and Janh at PIR, but didn't get a chance to say hello.  The smiles on the families faces were amazing.  I can't wait to figure out how to download my photos!!!

Hello All!  I am so glad you had a good time!!   any advice for us that are heading there this next week???

We'll we're back home now and it's hard to believe this trip is over.  Our family had a great time at graduation and visiting with my son for 8 hours.  We wanted to meet him at the airport but my son said they were told that family couldn't do that because of heightened security issues that were going on right now.  So last night we dropped him off at the base and watched him walk back to his ship.  It was sad watching this because we watched as families dropped of their sailors and each one looked so lonely walking back by themselves to their ships.  Well, I hope everyone enjoyed their visits and had a safe trip home.
