I got to go to two PIRs. My youngest son's was so hot people were passing out. My oldest son's was so cold we all nearly froze on the walk over to the building. But I did learn to wear comfortable shoes. The second PIR I wore my running shoes, the heck with fashion.

My brother insisted on taking my son to Hooters. We have a nice picture of him in uniform with the Hooter girls. He was over 21 and ordered a beer. There was no one in the entire restaurant but he still sipped the beer and kept looking around. He wouldn't let us take any pictures with his hat (lid?) on inside. I had to twist his arm inside the hotel room for pictures. He graduated in the middle of a blizzard so I wasn't going outside for pictures.

When Alex graduated we went out and got take out pizza. Then we brought it to the room so he could eat and relax. He was so afraid he would get pizza on his white uniform that he wasn't going to eat. So I said," take off the uniform and wear your Dad's tee shirt and running shorts." He said he wasn't allowed out of uniform and he was afraid to get in trouble. I had to convince him that we were on the second floor, the shades were closed and the places was not bugged before he would agree to change and eat.

Thanks Karen, We're always looking for a good restaurant. Now that the boys are gone, we get to eat out a lot more.

How old is he? Have you looked in renting a car for the day and dropping it at the airport? I don't know how the insurance is with under 25.
My son doesn't drive. So when he flew home from Norfolk, I arranged a limo service for him from the Virginia Beach base. It was $32.00 each way.

Cindy, I sent you a friend request so we could finish this conversation.
I forgot to add a piece of advise about greyhound. The computer reservations will schedule a layover when the station is closed. My son booked Virginia beach to Philadelphia. He thought it was good because it was overnight. He arrived at Deleware at 4:20 and his next bus picked him up in three hours to arrive downtown Philly at 8:30. Thankfully, I had decided to pick him up in Delaware instead of dealing with the rush hour traffic. He was let off on the street. The station was closed. Amtrak was across the road but he was coming home before going to Japan and had all his gear. He couldn't leave half his gear while he ran across the street with the other. I arrived 10 minutes later. Greyhound cheap and very comfortable. They now have WiFi and outlets at their seat.

Cindy would love to hear your feedback. My youngest is a freshman. He is in Nittany Pointe.

Jeano. I'm sitting in a hotel in Altoona reading your posts. LOL. (just moved my youngest into Penn state altoona). I feel your pain on the reservations. Amtrak and greyhound both give discounts to the military. I used to try to help my son juggle his leave between schools and deployment. They don't help much. Now he is in Japan and I don't have that luxury anymore.

Altoona to Harrisburg by way of Atlanta & DC?? Dumb. I had a friend fly from Pittsburgh to Philly by way of Atlanta. It was $200 cheaper, which makes no sense to me!
