Jeano, Try and deal with the airline directly. I have found that the airlines are much better to our sailors than travel agency. This is so the off season that you should be able to get him into Pittsburgh.

Phyllis, One of the things that helped me was to go to the store (stores actually) and buy every "Encouragement" or "I'm proud of you" card I could find. I had almost enough to send him a card everyother day. Then I sat down and started writing him letters. Not long ones, but a bunch of them. Then I numbered them and waited for the address to arrive. I became his cat's foster mom, so I even found cards that had messages from his cat. Poor animal, I chased her around to get her paw print on the cards. Take pictures of his dog. They have very little room but they always find a place for a picture of their pets. Hope some of this helps.

Phyllis, The hardest thing is the arrival of The Box. They send back everything that ties them to civilian life and therefore home. A lot of us not only cried for days, but couldn't wash those cloths. My husband finally got the box away from me and washed the cloths. He said " I love him too, but his socks smell". My husband the pragmatist.

Trish, I was looking forward to it also. Please let me know how it goes. I want to contribute to the park fees. I don't want you to get stuck with the bill.
Best to you sailor, also.

I am not going to be able to make it tomorrow. DARN. I have to work tomorrow. I just got home now. This will be a bad weekend. I am sick today and my son just found out today that he has to move into school at the beginning of the week. I guess he will have to pack Sunday. I want to make sure you have enough to pay for the park so I will mail you my share. I was looking forward to this.

Sissi, If you've got love to share than you need to join Molly's Adopt a Sailor. You can send small boxes, letters or even just a card. Whatever you would like. They even send cards and letters to injured sailors to help with their recovery.

I have a son in Norfolk. When ships are deployed they get mail various ways. Carriers and larger ships get their mail by helo. Some get mail forwarded to them and they pick them up when they reach a port of call. Fast Attack Submarines get mail when they reach a port. Boomer subs don't get mail at all. Hope that helps.

I'm also part of the group that will be sending really fun pillowcases to the ship.

Julie, I just finished ordering 124 flower Leis for the Crommelin. I'm having a lot of fun even if I can't send my son packages.
CindyH, hug that sailor for us all.

Donna & Lori, We have all been where you are now. Just keep talking to us, we not only understand but we won't tell you to stop crying. You'll stop when you are good and ready. I would stock up on Kleenex. The next few months will be full of crying moments. Start planning for the PIR, it will give you that light at the end of the tunnel, that you need.

April, I checked with my oldest son. He said that it is entirely up to the family. The Navy considers what they wear to be a family decision. The only uniform they can not wear is their digital camo as those are a working uniform and are worn only on base. I hope this has helped.
