Hi all, I'm leaving early tomorrow morning to spend the 4th with my son down in Norfolk. He's got Friday, Sat and Sunday off, so we will get to spend some time with him.

Thank you Trish for sharing a wonderful story. I loved the "he cleans up after himself" We all need to be reminded of all the Harry's stories these days. After 911, every military person had standing ovations at the airports. I have been readings stories in the Japan site of sailors being charged for extra luggage when they are deployed. My son was treated as a VIP when he went overseas (but we spoke up). I am starting to think that we navy moms have a mission to speak up to these airports, airlines and cell phones.

Hey Karen, Nice to see you here. I'm up in Cranberry Twp now, but I use to live in Murrysville. My favorite yarn shop is in Ligonier and I get out there a couple of times a year. How long will your son be deployed? My son Alex is a reactor operator on the USS Miami. presently somewhere in the Atlantic.

Beth, My youngest son left for deployment last March. He won't be back until sometime this fall. I've heard from him twice by e-mail. Its tough to get a phone call from a sub. I went through a number of deployments when my husband was in the Navy, but there is something so different when it is your child. He could be a real pain in the neck but he's my youngest son and this is as you said, a lot harder than I thought it would be. Hang in there!

Jonathan just emailed me about his "crossing the line" experience.
All I will say is that he had to crawl around alot and had yellow hair for a day. I am not sure if I am supposed to post this but he arrives tomorrow and gets 8 days shore leave. I am not saying where just in case but I am sure you can guess.

Hi Debbi, Welcome! What is your son's rate (job) going to be?

Barb, I know what you mean by not being able to see your son.My son only is allowed two weeks twice a year. last year he spent $2400 and travelled 36 hours one way and over 40 hours back. He said it just wasn't worth it to come home again this year.

Beth, Just remember that we're always here if you need us.

I joined Molly's Adopt a Sailor group because I can't send packages to my son. It gives me something to do that I wouldn't be able to do otherwise. This way I can support a sailor who wouldn't get mail otherwise. I still send loads of e-mails to Alex. I know he'll write when he can.

It makes perfect sense to a sub Mom. That's why we're all here on N4Ms because we understand each other.

My son is on the USS Miami. He's a Nuke.
