My son is on the USS Miami. He's a Nuke.

Beth, What boat is your son on? This is also the first deployment for my son.

He likes being on a fast attack because they get to go to places like Norway. He likes not having to shave or get a haircut and he says the food is great. But, he is having a tough time with the long stretches of boring watches. Not that he wants any real exitement, he is after all a reactor operator. I think he is also having a hard time with the lack of contact with home. They are after all the silent service. I don't see him making it a career, but I never know with Alex.

Alex has been gone since early March. My last e-mail from him was 2 months ago. Ah, the joys of having a submariner in the family. Hope you hear from your son soon.

Carol, They do have a "ceremony" when they cross the equator. Its all done in good fun and the Chiefs keep a lid on things. Most of the guys find it funny. Most of all, no one is required to participate, so If your son doesn't want to join in he doesn't have to. But if he's 19, then he'll probably have great fun with all the nonsense.

My son is a 'SHELL BACK" which means a sailor that crossed the equator!

Joan, I think almost all A schools are 6 to 8 weeks. Then its on to B or C schools for some rates. Nukes (my youngest) take almost 2 years to reach the fleet. They go to A school, then Nuke school and finally Prototype. What is your son's rate? (Job)

Happy Father's Day to all our Dads. Today is my oldest son's birthday and I actually got to talk to him, his girlfriend and the 8 other people helping him celebrate. It helps to know he's not alone. The sun is out here in Cranberry Twp., so there is hope for the rest of you.

Joan, When Alex was in BC, I went to the store and found a dozen different encouragement cards. Then I mailed one every day. I would also write letters in between, that way he had a larger volume of mail. When we went to graduation he told me how much it meant to him to get mail everyday. So keep writing and like Jana said, start writing now then mail them when you get his address.

Judy, I'm still here. Stay safe and stay in the basement until the weather passing. Here's sending dry weather your way. Its stopped raining up here in Cranberry.
