We have very bad weather rolling through the Pittsburgh area. I'm up in Cranberry and its pretty bad up here. I've heard that there are tornados in the area closer and to the east of Pittsburgh. Are you Mom's down there OK? I'm keeping all those in Allegheny County and Westmoreland county in my thoughts.

Hi Jana and Cathy. I guess this is where we let you know about The Box. A few days after they leave you will get The Box that contains their civilian life. I always suggest that you prepare with at least 2 boxes of tissues. I cried for days and I come from a military family. Three generations to be exact. But there is just something about that darn Box. I cried again when his brother's Box arrived.

Hi all, my son is also up for 3rd class petty officer in September. Does it take them 6 months to get their pay for that? WOW.
Candice, sorry to hear about the state trooper, that just happened not to long ago around Pittsburgh too and I had never seen soo many troopers and others in my life either. It is great to see they all come out to support each other. Where did this happen? I don't get to watch much tv so I unfornutaly did not hear about it on there. My best friends husband is a state trooper and when my son gets out of the Navy he wants to do that also. It scares me but if that is what he wants to do that is fine with me. Well everyone have a great day.

Welcome Barb to the group. My son is a CTR and is West Virginia. He is up for 3rd class petty officer in September and an E4. So proud of him. I just wanted to say welcome and have a great day. This group and others are a wonderful help for all involved.

Lyn, I didn't know that. My insurance dropped my son because he was not in school. That was 3 days before he left for boot camp. They did not tell me that boot camp was considered school. However, when I inquired about putting him on Cobra for three days they told me not to worry about it. The whole process takes 3 months to drop him. If anything where to happen, I could always back pay the cobra for the months that he was dropped. I had Aetna at the time. You really have to be your own advocate when it comes to your healthcare.

Linda, Glad to hear everything worked out so well for your son. The problem seems to be in that BC time frame. Whether the Navy knows about an old injury or they discover a pre-existing condition, the Navy just discharges the recruit. The only things they will treat are injuries or illness that obviously are connected to BC. I don't think most parents realize that during BC their child is a seaman recruit. Not actually in the Navy quite yet. So the Navy has no contractual commitment to them.
