I don't know if we have any Moms with kids in DEP or who have just left for BC. If you are out there or if any of you are on other lists please spread this message. If your kids leave for BC, don't drop them off your health insurance until they graduate from Great Lakes. A friend of ours recently found this out the hard way. Her son re-injured himself while at BC. It was determined that he couldn't stay in that branch of the service and he was medically discharged. Since he had not graduated from BC and it was determined that this was an old issue from before he joined the service they will not pay for the surgery he will need. His parents are now trying to get him back on their policy at my husband's company. They told his parents that they would have considered BC as school and they could have kept him on until he graduated. Just thought I'd mention it here in hopes it helps some one in the future.

Phyllis, our prayers are with you. Please let us know. If it helps, a friend who has her son and grandson in Iraq told me "No news is good news". Her son is a civilian hired to set up a police force in Iraq. He is always in dangerous places. Whenever something bad is on the news she waits 3 days and then feels relieved. I hope this helps.

Cathy, Just remember that we are here any time you need us. We've all been through it and we understand as no one else can.

Sallyforth, My son had wanted to go into the SEAL program before he enlisted. He told me that he had to pass the physical, eye exam and some kind of fitness test. I believe your son needs some kind of recommendation from his present command. Then he would need to wait for a slot to open up at BUDS. Hope that helps a little.

I have also found that many younger people who are unkind to those in the military have tried to join but have been rejected. The numbers are a lot larger than you think. I talked to a recruiter once and he said the number of people turned down, esp. for the Navy, is very large. Mostly it is because of weight issues but also because of many other factors. With this economy the numbers are even larger. Our children are the best of their generation. Have a wonderful Memorial Day!

How the military is treated, depends on where you are in the country. Sailors who walk down the street in NYC ( my old home town) are treated to lunch or dinner. Given theater tickets and some one will buy them a drink. But then again New Yorkers don't need to have long memories to know how much they owe to anyone in uniform.

I finally heard from my son, Alex. He's been gone for 6 weeks on his first sub deployment. He sent his first e-mail today. He got his 'fish" yay, he is growing a beard (apparently he looks like Shaggy) not so yay, and he got to see some of Norway. They left Norway and are on their way somewhere. Having a son on a sub is very strange. But it was wonderful to hear from him.

I think it is hard no matter if they are you first, second or third. My son will be coming home on friday and we are all going camping. He is West Virginia. I can't wait, even though he is only 5 hours away, I still don't see him much. He is saving up his leave time for August. See, his birthday is in August and he has not been home in a while for his birthday since he left. He has I think the las time I talked to him like 20 or more days saved now. I can't wait to have him home for that long, it will be wonderful.
I saw a great saying over the weekend on a plaque it said, " Home of the Free, Because of the Brave." That is soo true. I plan on buying next weekend, if it is still there.

Well gotta go for now, got school work to do. English online, yeah.:(
Everyone have a great day!!!!!!! :)

Hi Laura, Welcome to the group. I'm still trying to learn how to deal with my sons being so far away. My youngest son is out on the USS Miami and won't be back for months. His brother is stationed in Virginia on shore duty, so I do get to see him once in a while. But I think it is always hard when the one deployed is your baby. Boy would he hate that sentence, he is 21 after all. BTW, where are you in PA?
