Michele, March works a lot better for me. I'm from Murrysville in Westmoreland county. I-79 is an easy ride from here. Keep me posted.

My son is on the Miami. I haven't heard from him for 6 weeks. That's not unusual, just really annoying. Its hard to plan for the Holidays if I don't know when or if he'll be coming home. He's never been much for communicating, some things never change.

I have a suggestion for those who are worried about expensive or other items being stolen. There is an insurance company (no I do not work for them) called USAA that insures only active duty and retired military. They have a form of renters insurance that covers personal items no matter where they are when they are stolen. It is inexpensive and covers sailors whether there stuff is at an apartment, at base housing, in storage or even if they are at sea. That might be something that you could pay for them to cover their electronics. It is the insurance we have had since my husband was in the Navy and now they cover both my sons.

Both of my sons went directly to A school after GL. I'm so glad to hear that you will be having your son home for Christmas. Both of mine will be home around the 28th, so we will have a late Christmas. Now for gift ideas. Lets start big. My oldest wanted his car (we drove it down to him from Pittsburgh to Pensacola). The other things were a cell phone (text messaging included) that we are paying for him. It encourages him to call home. An ipod, my youngest uses his endlessly while on his sub. A laptop, always a favorite. Any small electronic items seems to be a big hit. Hope this helps a little. Oh, one other thing. Gift cards to restaurants because they do get off base while at A school.

Hi Kathy....I'm from Havertown PA - a sububurb about 15 miles outside Philadelphia. My son has been in the Navy since last February.

Judy...my son's PIR was back in April. Me and my 2 daughters made the drive from a suburb outside of Philadalphia. Took turns driving and it was long but enjoyable. Easy hiway drive....about 14 hours that included stops along the way. Worst part of the drive was in Chicago! We hit it during rush hour. Stayed for 3 nights at the Best Western which was wonderful. My daughters decided after we said goodbye to my son on Sunday evening, that we should just head home then. I would most definately make sure to get a couple hours of shut-eye before doing that again! Enjoy PIR...it is, withouth a doubt, the most impressive and emotional thing I have ever witnessed. Not many dry eyes in the stands. Good luck to you and your new sailor. You have alot to be proud of. Carol

Michele,
Most bases have an adopt a sailor program for different Holidays. My son won't be coming home for Thanksgiving, but he's spending it with another family near his sub base. I would suggest that you find out what your daughter is allowed to receive in care packages. Then you can send her some small things for Christmas. I can't give you ideas because the Navy keeps changing what they can receive. Just remember, No food and that she has very very little storage space. Maybe you can get her friends and family to send her cards. They love mail, so arrange to spread out the cards and letters so she gets at least one every day. That way she can feel like part of the family even while she is away. My boys told me that getting mail is a life saver.

Hi from Pittsburgh, Well just east of the Burgh. Tell your daughter that she will have plenty of company. They are all scared and nervous. Its just that the boys hide it better. All she really needs to do is listen carefully and follow instructions. Paying attention is why female recruits do so well at Basic. She will have other female recruits to share the experience with while she is at GL.

Hi Betty, My name is Lyn. We are presently living in Westmoreland county, but we are going to be moving to Cranberry in the near future. My son Alex is on the SSN Miami and is stationed in Groton,Conn. He's an RO on the sub. His brother is a CTN and is stationed in Norfolk,VA. Welcome aboard.

Since we are a Navy family that goes back 3 generations, I had told my son some of the things about boot camp that were told to me. Before he left, all I got was the teenage "eye roll" and the "ya, Mom. Right". But his letters from Basic were filled with "OK, so you were right and You were soooo right." But I resisted the urge to say "I told you so," and just enjoyed the letters.
