OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I just wanted to know your experience with getting a military move? my husband has been awaiting orders and he just received them today... and he has to report to his next station NEXT WEEK! that doesn't give us much time to prepare. the last time we moved we did a dity move... i want to get a government move this time. can anyone tell me how long it took for your application to get approved on move.mil after turning in the supporting documents to the ppo (orders,poa) i am just worried that they will not process them within the next week and i will be stuck moving and driving across the country all by myself...

I would say make sure you're in contact with your local personal property office. Be very firm and sweet when ever you talk to people. Look through our discussions we have tons of info. Where are you moving?

i talked with them, they are so backed up that they will not be able to move me until june. i am moving to mayport/FL

I love Mayport/Jacksonville! If you've never eaten at a Mellow Mushroom its a must do. My husband was there for 2 years and really enjoyed it. Lots to do with in a 3 hour drive Disney, Savannah, St. Augustine, lots of small islands to explore.

To find the safest neighborhood I use neighborhoodscout.com  then I kinda pull up google maps to find those locations. I use zillow to look for housing I also use Craigslist.  You can use  to find BAH. I always suggest living on less than BAH (so you can use to pay for electricity, water, trash, internet, and what not).

we are from Savannah GA so we are happy to be closer to home for a while. 

also, mellow mushroom was a favorite in savannah, so good to know theres one close by in mayport.

Thank you for the information! I have been looking at zillow, i am weary of trusting people on craigslist as we had problems with it in Savannah. Our BAH will remain around the same as it was when i lived in savannah, and in Great Lakes. Defiantly know not to get everything over BAH. I never understand why people decide to tap into their personal income for housing when the government pays for it, especially under one income. Thankfully, i will be able to transfer my cosmetologist licence from GA to FL so i am excited to get back to work myself. I was not able to do that here in IL. We are looking for a house to rent this time though, we have a large dog and we live on the thrid floor and our neighbors were always complaining about 'stomping' even though our dog was just being... a dog. I'm looking for a place with a fenced in backyard and a nice neighborhood close to base!

Now for my question:


I have never had a HHG move done. We did a dity move the last time. Is there anything i should know? I'm kind of anxious because i'm going to be here by myself and i don't have any clue what is going to go on. The PPO didn't really tell me anything except that they have reserved 3 days to pack and move our stuff.. that was it. Do i need to take pictures of our stuff? Do i need my own checklist? Do i need to put anything in boxes? Should i take the clothes out of the drawers? I don't need to worry about moving anything myself right.. im am just stressing out because my husband will not be here and i am completely alone. I am going to have to move my dogs kennel and a steam cleaner for the carpet myself up three flights of stairs. Thats the thing i'm most unhappy about, other than having to make the drive by myself. Guess thats all part of this wonderful navy life.. (lol)

We just moved with the Navy in November and it was wonderful. I know they don't give you a whole lot of info up front but it will all come together :) They should send someone to your house to estimate weight and he/she can answer your questions too. You can take pics of your valuables if you want to... it will help with claims if anything is damaged or lost. And things will be damaged. The movers are careful and professional but there's only so much they can do with a giant trailer truck bumping around on the highway for a few days. I did not make a checklist for anything; I don't think you'll need that. DO NOT put anything in boxes, wrapping, or in any way pack it yourself. If you do, the moving company is not liable if it gets damaged because it's not their fault. Like I said, they are pros so they know what they're doing anyways. Do not take stuff out of drawers either. They'll just wrap your dresser and other furniture in a blanket, wrap that in plastic, and haul it on the truck. Your stuff will get shaken up so I took out my jewelry and such before packing day but otherwise it all gets there just as you leave it.

I know this is stressful and will be really hard without your hubby but you can do it!! *hugs*

1. You should always have current pictures of your things in case you ever have a theft or fire.  They will pack everything (except the items they won't pack food, candles, wine, and liquor).

Use a spare room/bathroom or rope off a corner to pack the things you don't want to let out of your sight (photo albums for me) along with the things your gonna move that they won't. I see no reason to restart my kitchen every move. '

Also, I plan on kenneling my dogs the day the mover comes just so I don't have to worry about them being stressed out.
